Bronx Bombs Away: MLB Bettors Hammering Yankees With Futures Markets Back Up

The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers have emerged as public favorites in the MLB futures markets in the days following the confirmation of a shortened 2020 season. This information comes from analysis of bets made on DraftKings Sportsbook, according to a company release.

After weeks of failed labor negotiations, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced a 60-game season with a 10-team playoff to follow. Regular season play will start on July 23 or July 24.

Teams will play 40 games within their division and 20 against the same division in the other league. Reducing travel will hopefully protect players from the spread of coronavirus, along with a battery of other preventative measures hoped to minimize risk. With multiple players testing positive during informal training sessions held in multiple states, safety becomes a top priority.

Before the prolonged shutdown began, three teams were pegged by oddsmakers as the major favorites: the Dodgers, Yankees, and Houston Astros. The Dodgers lead most of the boards with the lowest odds, usually around +375 to win the World Series. The Yankees are tied with LA on PointsBet and second choice elsewhere, priced around +400. The Astros, despite the continuing controversy around the sign stealing that occurred over the last few seasons, are the third choice, ranging from +650 to +800.

Money coming in on Yankees

As of the latest data released by DraftKings, the betting public has gone heavy on the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees have received 49% of the handle on the World Series market with 37% of the total bets. No other team is close. The Dodgers have the second most tickets at 13% but only 7% of the handle. The Mets have 10% of handle, the only other team in double digits in either category, on 6% of bets.

The numbers show some regional bias in the market, as the two NYC teams are drawing significant support. The Mets numbers are curious as they are fourth best in price on the NL pennant futures and in a group of teams with odds around 20/1 that include division rivals Philadelphia, Washington, and others. If the five-team playoff format holds, it’s likely one or more of those teams will be watching October baseball from home.

Pennants up for grabs

In the league champion markets, the Yankees and Dodgers are clear favorites to capture their respective pennants. Both hold the majority of the handle in those futures, with the Yankees 56 percent edging out LA’s 55%. After that, the numbers are surprising.

The Yankees earned 46% of the tickets. A distant second at 11% of the bets are the Chicago White Sox, who are middle of the pack at 15/1. The Rays hold the second most handle at 20%, despite their +800 price, tied with Minnesota for third choice. The second-lowest priced Astros are drawing very little support and could be due for a price boost.

In the National League, the Dodgers hold 20% of the bets, which actually trails the Atlanta Braves at 22%. However, the Bravos don’t even have the most handle in their own division. They’re trailing the Mets’ 18% (on 15% of the bets) and the Phillies’ 4% (on 8% of the bets). Atlanta is second best in the league at +600 but far from the Dodgers at +175.

The most surprising choice among the betting public on DK? Probably the Cincinnati Reds with 10% of handle on 13% of the bets.

FanDuel promos and updates

Fans looking to rejoin the live action at FanDuel Sportsbook can do so in Pennsylvania with the reopening of Valley Forge Casino in Montgomery County. While tracks and casinos are reopening in the Garden State starting July 2, the company is not expected to welcome back players to New Jersey’s most popular retail location at the Meadowlands in the near future. No word on when the status might change or an announcement could be expected.

Online, the promos keep coming for one of the biggest names in gaming. Through Friday, FanDuel users can bet $50 or more on the World Series futures market and get $10 per regular season win in the first five games once play resumes next month. For those looking to move now on those prices, this may be an offer too good to miss.
