Reasons Xavier Can Cover

Despite an underwhelming performance in the first round, Xavier did manage to eke out a win. In the last 10 minutes of the game, once Kennesaw State went up 61-48, Xavier went on a 15-0 run, stopping Kennesaw from scoring for 6 straight minutes. They showed they can score in bunches, get stops when they need to, and score well.

The other great case for them is their opposition. Pitt managed to score 22 points in the first 10 minutes of the game, before scoring a grand total of 18 in the next 22 minutes. If Pitt can’t create reliable offense, then the hole in Xavier’s game – their 72nd ranked defense, per KenPom – is mostly fine.

If Xavier can find the level they played at to close the game against Kennesaw for more than 10 minutes in this game, their path to a win and a cover is very easy to see.

Reasons Pitt Can Cover

Pitt’s defense held incredibly strong in this game, conceding only 41 points total and holding Iowa State without a made field go for over 10 minutes. If their defense can keep creating turnovers – they created 15 against Iowa State – then they can keep Xavier out of the rhythm that saved them against Kennesaw State.

Sean Miller has to be the other reason for optimism for Pittsburgh as the head man has struggled mightily in the tournament. The last time Miller made the tournament in Arizona he lost as a 4 seed in Round 1. He also lost in the first round as a 6 seed two years prior, and in between he lost to an 11 seed in the Sweet 16 as a 2 seed. And now, they’re coming off a game where a 14 seed had what could have been last shot to win.

Final Thoughts

Pitt’s defense was absolutely part of their success against Iowa State, but it’s highly unlikely they’ll have an opponent shoot that badly from the field against them again. And without that, they’re in trouble.

Both teams won their first games with deeply concerning offensive struggles, but they managed to score enough to pull it off. Against higher quality opposition, that’s unlikely to be good enough.

If the Xavier team that showed up for the last 10 minutes shows up all game, they’ll win in a walk. But that’s no guarantee.
