BetLucky WV Sportsbook Review

Launched in December 2018, BetLucky Sportsbook was the first online sports betting platform to go live in West Virginia.

Delaware North, a local land-based casino and sportsbook operator, owns BetLucky. The BetLucky app was designed by Mionmi. The British betting software company helped develop similar apps for many sportsbooks operating in Nevada.

BetLucky focuses predominantly on North American sports and in-play betting services. Considering the limited pregame betting options, this might cost Delaware North when bigger New Jersey platforms finally go live in West Virginia.

Legality

The 2018 West Virginia sports betting bill authorized online betting, with the West Virginia Lottery providing the regulatory framework and oversight for this new industry. BetLucky operates under a license issued to Delaware North, the owner of Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack and Mardi Gras Casino & Resort.

As required by West Virginia law, the minimum age for placing bets via BetLucky is 21 years old.

BetLucky: A mobile-only sportsbook

Delaware North launched BetLucky as a mobile service with no web-based client. The company hasn’t made any official statements regarding the potential release of a desktop browser app, so it’s hard to predict whether it will become available later this year.

The mobile app is available in two versions.

Players can download from the iTunes Store, and it is compatible with iOS 12 or higher.

Android users must download the app directly from the BetLucky site. Unfortunately, it isn’t available in the Google Play Store due to Google’s strict antigambling policy. It is compatible with Android 7.0 and higher using OSV4.2.

Betting options and restrictions

BetLucky focuses predominantly on popular North American sports, such as football, basketball, hockey, baseball, motorsports, tennis, mixed martial arts and golf.

While this doesn’t sound impressive, the platform has already made significant progress seeing as only three sports were available at launch.

BetLucky’s software provider is capable of expanding this selection to cover international events, so we hope for things to move in the right direction. Especially so, as Delaware North will undoubtedly be put under a lot of pressure when FanDuel and DraftKings launch their online sportsbooks in West Virginia.

As for bet types, BetLucky sticks to what works: moneylines, point spreads, totals, parlays, round robins and futures.

There is a limited number of pre-match markets, but the site makes up for it to some extent with a variety of in-play betting options.

Live betting

In-play betting is where BetLucky truly shines.

The number of live betting options is often higher than the number of pregame markets. In a typical football game, players should be able to put their money on game total, alternate game total, home team and away team score totals, quarter results, the first team to score, point spreads and the outright winner.

The interface is clear and responsive, but the app doesn’t provide the player with any information beyond the current score and quarter. With no in-house streaming service, this forces customers to watch the game on TV or via a third-party site, which simply doesn’t cut it in 2019.

Additionally, unlike DraftKings, BetLucky will not support early cash outs, a feature that allows customers to avoid late-game surprises at the cost of a smaller payout or cut their losses when their team is behind.

Banking

BetLucky customers can fund their betting account remotely using two methods.

The first is to make a PayNearMe deposit at any 7-Eleven stores; the second is to use a credit or debit card to send a payment via Lucky North Play+.

Withdrawals, on the other hand, are always handled via a check by courier, which can take up to two weeks. Bettors who live near Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack or Mardi Gras Casino & Resort can make a deposit or cash out on the spot.

Promotions

BetLucky doesn’t offer many promotions that compare to its future competitors. New BetLucky customers receive a $20 free bet, which pales in comparison with the $500 deals offered by both FanDuel and DraftKings in New Jersey.

BetLucky also runs a loyalty program, allowing its customers to earn Lucky North Club Points, which customers can exchange for Wheeling Island comps. While this looks great on paper, every $1 you earn requires you to put $1,000 on the line, which makes this offer irrelevant for casual bettors.

Customer care

The BetLucky website features a brief FAQ section that addresses 22 basic questions about the apps, account management, betting rules, land-based facilities and problem gambling.

While this is understandable as BetLucky is a mobile-only service, we hope BetLucky replaces this section by a more comprehensive resource.

In the meantime, BetLucky customers are free to contact the customer service team via email at [email protected] or via phone at 866-807-4007.
