The World Cup countdown clock is now in its final month. After waiting nearly four years since events in Russia took place, it is time for Qatar to be handed the task of hosting soccer’s biggest party.

Our group-by-group stage guide is also moving along at a rather considerable pace. Group F was covered in our previous article, so it is time to analyze what is likely to happen within Group G.

Group G Team Previews

Each team plays the others in the group once. The top-two finishers after round robin play advance from the group to a single-elimination knockout stage. Wins earn three points. A draw is worth one point. A loss is worth zero points.

Outright Odds : When it comes to conversation regarding outright World Cup candidates, Brazil currently has the loudest voice. Although they have failed to win the tournament in the past two decades, many feel that 2022 will be the once again be their year.

With the five-time winners currently pegged as favorites for success in Qatar, the home of samba soccer will now have to live up to the expectations that have been set. That means playing with the weight of the nation on their backs.

A nation that considers soccer a religion and for those who are making their prayers in cities such as Sao Paulo and Rio De Janeiro, they hope that the likes of Neymar and Gabriel Jesus can emulate the class of 2002. That was the year in which Ronaldo and Ronaldinho led the South American nation to global supremacy.

Although this Brazil squad does not possess one player with the same phenomenal level of talent, they do have the perfect balance to finally return to the top step of world soccer.

Group Qualification Odds : Brazil are the current outright favorites to win this year’s tournament. Because of that, backing them to also top Group G does not offer much in the way of value. However, it may also be one of the smartest bets that you can make before a ball is kicked.

If you pair their qualification with Argentina in Group C and should the two South American rivals follow the form guides, this would be an easy way to make some early tournament profit.

When you consider the plethora of attacking talent that Brazil manager Tite can call upon, it is fair to say that he has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal. Because of this, they are unlikely to be embarrassed in the group stage.

Outright Odds  : Although Serbia are not going to be in the top bracket of World Cup contenders in Qatar, they are not necessarily a team you want to be paired with in the group stage. If their talisman can find the net in the first two weeks, it may just prolong their stay in the tournament.

With Alexsandar Mitrovic’s goals helping Fulham get off to a solid start in this season’s Premier League, the 28-year-old will now look to convert that form to the World Cup. With the physical shape he is in, a bet in the Golden Boot market should not be overlooked.

However, Serbia are not just a one-main team. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Dusan Vlahovic are waiting to be called upon and Dragan Stojković’s squad are positioned to be one of the main disrupting forces in Qatar.

Group Qualification Odds : In the two previous groups we have seen a dividing line between the two giants in the groups and the two relative minnows. In Group G, it is fair to say that the lines are a lot more blurred.

Although Switzerland got the better of Serbia four years ago and earned an invite to the Round of 16, it looks as if the Balkan nation are well placed to exact the perfect form of revenge in 2022.

With the fixture between Serbia and Switzerland likely to be so pivotal in terms of who qualifies for the knockout phase, goals are going to be hugely important. This is a commodity that Serbia will find easier to come across.

Outright Odds : When the World Cup draw was made a few months ago, there was likely a feeling of déjà vu within the Switzerland camp. They are paired with Brazil and Serbia for the second World Cup in a row and they hope to match the progress of four years ago. The Swiss finished second in Group E and subsequently qualified for the Round of 16. It should not be forgotten that Vladimir Petković’s side also managed a 1-1 draw with Brazil in their opening fixture.

Whether they can achieve something similar in 2022 remains to be seen. Although this is a nation that is always defensively robust, a chronic lack of goals has always seemed to be their undoing – something that they will need to find the cure for in the Middle East.

Group Qualification Odds : When comparing the group qualification odds, there is currently little difference between Serbia and Switzerland. For those who are still unsure who will finish in the top two, it may even need a toss of a coin to decide.

If the game between the two European nations ends in a draw, then goals for and against will be hugely important. Concede too many to Brazil and your chances are hampered. Score too few against Cameroon and you will likely be sent packing.

Outright Odds  : After missing out on qualification four years ago, Cameroon are back on the game’s biggest stage. This is their eighth appearance in their history and in their previous seven attempts they only made the knockout phase once.

Progress came back in 1990 when Roger Milla made it to the last eight of the competition. However, they would eventually be beaten by England, who finished fourth. That was a whole generation ago. Although this current Cameroonian crop have a sprinkling of stardom within their ranks, backing them for World Cup success is something that should largely be avoided.

Qualification Odds : When looking at the Group G landscape, it is Cameroon who find themselves as the rank outsiders. When weighing up the strength of three other teams in this mini-league, you would have to say rightly so.

If Cameroon are to have any joy in Qatar, it will come at the expense of either Switzerland or Serbia. Should they win one of those two fixtures, it may just throw a spanner in the works. With that said, success against either of these European forces is going to be rather tall order.

Best of luck navigating World Cup Group G odds.
