WGC FedEx St. Jude odds

We are now just three weeks away from the FedEx Cup playoffs and less than two weeks from the start of the PGA Championship. Top golfers will be firing in full force over the next six weeks, and it starts with the FedEx St. Jude Invitational at TPC Southwind in Memphis.

A total of 78 players will tee it up in this World Golf Championship event. But not Tiger Woods.

Woods will enter the PGA Championship having played just one PGA Tour event since February when finishing six-over par and T40 at the Memorial Tournament.

Top golfers in the FedEx St. Jude Invitational

When evaluating the top players to win and tournament match-ups, know that there is no cut for the WGC event and golfers will play four rounds through the weekend.

Brooks Koepka is the defending champion of this event, but he enters in terrible form and missed another cut last week at the 3M Open despite better ball striking and approach play. Koepka lost five strokes putting in two rounds and is in danger of missing the FedExCup playoffs altogether as he currently ranks No. 154 in the FedEx Cup standings. There will be 27 of the top 30 players in the FedExCup standings in the FedEx St. Jude field.

That will include the top eight players in the World Golf Rankings looking to cash in one week ahead of the PGA Championship. New world No. 1 Jon Rahm enters off his win at the Memorial Tournament.

The current top players’ finishing position in last year’s WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational is also noted here:

  1. Jon Rahm (7)
  2. Rory McIlroy (T4)
  3. Justin Thomas(T12)
  4. Dustin Johnson (T20)
  5. Webb Simpson (2)
  6. Brooks Koepka (1)
  7. Bryson DeChambeau (T48)
  8. Patrick Reed (T12)

The WGC FedEx St. Jude event offers the largest prize pool since the PGA Tour restart in mid-June. Every player who finishes four rounds is guaranteed at least $50,000, and the top 25 players earn at least $100,000. The winner will take home more than $1.74 million.

You certainly don’t see Rahm priced at +2200 like he was at the Memorial Tournament. Rahm opened at +850 to win this week, followed by McIlroy, Thomas and DeChambeau. Hovering around +2000 are Simpson, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. Dustin Johnson, coming off horrendous scoring in the last two tournaments, is a two-time winner at TPC Southwind and opened at odds of +3500 this week. It’s worth noting that he did win the Travelers Championship in June at odds of +2800.

Last year Johnson, McIlroy, Koepka and Rahm were all priced between +1000 to +1200 to win the WGC-FedEx St. Jude. But Koepka should be twice those odds this year. Also reduced at nearly half of last year’s odds will be DeChambeau, Simpson and Reed, who were +3000 to +4000 to win the event in 2019.

Course and tournament information

  • Course: TPC Southwind
  • Location: Memphis, TN
  • Date: July 30-Aug. 2, 2020
  • Par: 70 / Yardage 7,237
  • Purse: $10.5 Million / Winner $1.74 M
  • Fairways/Rough: Meyer zoysia / 419 bermudagrass
  • Greens: Champion bermudagrass
  • TV: Golf Channel (Thurs-Sun) and CBS (Thurs-Sun 3-6pm ET)
  • Twitter: @WGCFedEx / #WGCFedEx

The St. Jude Classic was a staple at TPC Southwind for 29 years, and became a WGC event in 2019. The small greens at TPC Southwind average just 4,300 square feet. The course was toughened up for the WGC event and as you’re watching and wagering in-play, the toughest holes are the Par 4s at 5, 12, 17, 7 and 18. The toughest Par 3 is the longest at No. 14. The two Par 5s are the easiest scoring holes on the course at No. 3 and 16. The third hole has been redesigned, adding nearly 25 yards and a new tee box with  the fairway shifted 15 yards to the right. A lake in the middle of the fairway comes into play on the second shot.

The signature hole is the Par 3 with an island green at No. 11, playing near 160 yards. There are 11 holes with water hazards, as lakes, ponds and streams are scattered throughout along the fairways and defending the Bermuda grass greens. In addition, every bunker on the course was re-edged, some redesigned and each of the 76 bunkers has fresh new sand.

Key stats

A history of rounds at TPC Southwind shows that Strokes Gained: Approach is the important stat for Top-10 finishers followed by SG: Putting. Approach shots from 150-175 yards are tops in shot distribution followed by 175-200 yards.

However, SG: Ball Striking is a heavily weighted stat this week along with SG: Approach and SG: Par 4. Other stats of interest at SG: Off-the-Tee and then SG: Around the Green.

Driving accuracy at TPC Southwind is less than PGA Tour average (61%). Same with Greens in Regulation (66%).
