Week 5 NFL Underdogs
Los Angeles Rams @ Seattle Seahawks
Unless the Seahawks are +3 or better before kickoff, there’s not enough value to make a pregame bet.
Even with Seattle running back Chris Carson (neck) listed as questionable, the Rams’ defense was exposed in Week 4 to the tune of MVP candidate Kyler Murray. Russell Wilson can generate a similar amount of damage.
Potential Underdog Angle: Seahawks teaser, live +7.5 or better
New York Jets vs. Atlanta Falcons
We cashed in on the Jets as touchdown underdogs against the Titans, but the betting market has adjusted and bumped this line down to a flat field goal. With rookie signal caller Zach Wilson facing his first test overseas, let’s continue along.
Green Bay Packers @ Cincinnati Bengals
Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder) is out, so Joe Burrow (9.2 yards per pass attempt) should have opportunities to expose a weaker secondary. But on the flip side, Aaron Rodgers can do the same against an overrated Bengals defense.
Detroit Lions @ Minnesota Vikings
Given the Lions’ recent injuries and this line zipping past a viable Vikings teaser number, stay away in a bounce-back spot for Minnesota.
Miami Dolphins @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Dolphins represent the first of my NFL Week 5 underdogs as best bets.
Denver Broncos @ Pittsburgh Steelers
Are you trusting backup Drew Lock if Teddy Bridgewater (concussion) doesn’t start for the Broncos? Me neither.
New Orleans Saints @ Washington Football Team
Philadelphia Eagles @ Carolina Panthers
After facing the Jets, Saints and Texans to begin the season, the Panthers allowed 8.5 YPA and 7.2 yards per carry, respectively, to the Cowboys in Week 4. I’m anticipating another defensive letdown against Jalen Hurts & Co.
Potential Underdog Angle: Eagles +3 or better
Tennessee Titans @ Jacksonville Jaguars
The Titans should at least see wideout A.J. Brown (hamstring) return after he and Julio Jones missed their loss at the Jets. But even after Trevor Lawrence found a rhythm against the Bengals, I’m not touching Urban Meyer‘s team with a ten-foot pole.
New England Patriots @ Houston Texans
Following an emotional loss to the Buccaneers, the Patriots now have COVID-19 concerns on their offensive line. Davis Mills and the Texans‘ offense looked putrid in Buffalo, but consider Buffalo’s elite defense before leaving a live bet on the table.
Conclusion: Texans live +10.5 or better
Chicago Bears @ Las Vegas Raiders
Keep an eye on the Raiders‘ injury report, as rookie Justin Fields could deliver another sound performance against a banged-up secondary.
Potential Underdog Angle: Bears +5.5 or better
Cleveland Browns @ Los Angeles Chargers
We’ve already seen the market overreact a bit to the Chargers‘ double-digit win in primetime, and that gives us another valuable teaser leg among the NFL Week 5 underdogs.
Potential Underdog Angle: Browns teaser (+8 or better)
New York Giants @ Dallas Cowboys
Despite the spread sitting at a key number, a chunk of the Giants‘ receiving core (Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton) is still dealing with hamstring injuries. I’m not stepping in front of this Cowboys train.
San Francisco 49ers @ Arizona Cardinals
Say hello to another one of my best bets.
Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs
Potential Underdog Angle: Bills teaser (+8 or better)
Indianapolis Colts @ Baltimore Ravens
I’ll need a slightly better number than the current line, but if Jonathan Taylor can cash in on a healthy workload again, the Colts will have a chance to keep the duel-threat Lamar Jackson on the sidelines.
Potential Underdog Angle: Colts +7.5 or better
