Washington D.C. Sports Betting Sees Massive Year-Over-Year Growth After Expansion
Washington, D.C. is experiencing a sports betting renaissance of sorts with the newly expanded mobile betting market. Where previously, the D.C. sports betting market was limited to one districtwide mobile sportsbook, multiple sports betting apps are now available for bettors. Locals have embraced the mobile expansion, with the market seeing a 254.1% increase in activity year over year for July 2024.
DC Sports Betting Market Grows
The July revenue report released by the Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG) reveals $27.3 million in mobile betting handle. Sportsbooks totaled $3.9 million in sports betting revenue in July 2024. Revenue is up 176.2% year over year.
Year to date, the nation’s capital has raked in $162.8 million in mobile wagers, up 65.4% year over year. In April, the OLG replaced its previous exclusive districtwide mobile provider in GambetDC with FanDuel. Beginning mid-July, multiple mobile sportsbooks could launch districtwide. The local betting market has ballooned to record numbers in just that short time.
With the incoming NFL betting and college football betting seasons, Washington, D.C., is likely to see even more significant betting numbers. It is a wonder how much revenue the district has been missing out on under its previous system. This jarring difference in activity may have led to the Attorney General investigating GambetDC for its poor performance.

Sportsbooks Establish Themselves in DC
Launching in April benefitted FanDuel as it established itself above the pack. FanDuel was the only districtwide mobile sportsbook live for the entirety of July, and raked in $20.1 million in betting handle, 73.6% of the total betting market.
BetMGM saw $3.3 million in mobile betting handle. Caesars Sportsbook took in $1.9 million in wagers. DraftKings is the most recent addition to the district, raking in $1.2 million in bets for July.
August will be a much better representation of the market, with each sportsbook having a whole month of betting.
