Golden State's Playoff Streak Ends
Since 2015, which coincides with the start of Steve Kerr's coaching tenure in the Bay Area, the Warriors have been favored in each of their postseason series. However, their next opponent snapped a run that spanned over 10 seasons and included six championship banners.
For the first time since the 2014 NBA playoffs, when Golden State fell to Blake Griffin and the Clippers in the first round, the Warriors are series underdogs. Per the odds table, the best price on Kerr's team to advance to the Western Conference finals is +150 at BetMGM Sportsbook.
For reference, Minnesota opened as a -130 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook before it was immediately steamed up to the -180 range.
Evidently, the market has adjusted the Timberwolves' power rating following their series victory over the Lakers. Minnesota's athleticism was on full display versus Los Angeles' porous defense, tallying 40.5 isolations per 100 possessions (via Second Spectrum) — the highest rate among any first-round matchup. In fact, Lakers star Luka Doncic was blown by on 65.4% of all drives he defended in their five-game duel.
A New Beginning
The Warriors are the sixth No. 7 seed to win a first-round series since 1988 and the first seventh-seed to advance as a favorite.
Entering the postseason, Golden State was just the second No. 7 seed favored over a No. 2 seed. The other occasion came in 2021, as the Suns (+220) eliminated the Lakers in six games. Nevertheless, Los Angeles held a 2-1 series lead before Anthony Davis missed the rest of the playoffs with a groin injury.
Kerr's bunch has undergone an unprecedented turnaround from Feb. 8 onward. Since Butler's Warriors debut, they've notched a 27-11 record with the NBA's No. 1 defensive rating.
They're also the only team with three regular-season wins against the T-Wolves. Granted, all four contests were before Golden State acquired Butler.
Bench minutes significantly favored the Warriors, outscoring Minnesota by 25.6 points per 100 possessions in Anthony Edwards’ 41 minutes off the court.
