As the NBA playoffs continue to unfold, there has been no shortage of storylines, but among the biggest right now is the status of Victor Wembanyama moving forward. Early in Game 2 of the San Antonio Spurs-Portland Trail Blazers series on Tuesday night, Wembanyama took a hard fall and hit his head on the court. He was taken back to the locker room and later ruled out with a concussion, immediately turning his health into one of the biggest questions of the postseason.

In the short term, the impact was obvious. Portland rallied for a 106-103 win to even the series at 1-1, taking advantage after Wembanyama exited just 12 minutes into his game. What could have been a 2-0 Spurs lead is now a tied series heading back to Portland.

Now the bigger question is what happens next. Under the NBA’s concussion protocol, a player diagnosed with a concussion cannot return to full participation for at least 48 hours, including the date of diagnosis, and must also complete the required return-to-participation process before being cleared. Since Game 3 is not until Friday in Portland, the schedule at least gives San Antonio a little time, but that still does not guarantee Wembanyama will be available.

That's why this matters so much. If Wembanyama misses even one more game, it could have a major impact not only on this series, but on the entire Western Conference picture. He is the centerpiece of San Antonio’s defense, one of the league’s most unique playoff weapons, and the type of star whose absence can completely change a matchup.

So while more testing and evaluation are still expected, all eyes are now on Wembanyama and how quickly he can work through protocol. The Spurs still have every reason to believe they can win this series, but the uncertainty around their best player has now become the biggest storyline in it.
