USFL Week 8 Odds

Houston Gamblers at Pittsburgh Maulers

The Gamblers saw their four-game winning streak snapped by the team that’s now the hottest squad in the USFL, the Showboats, with a 23-20 loss in Week 7. The Maulers fell to the Stars by a narrow 37-31 score.

The Gamblers’ stumble in Week 7 aside, Houston remains a formidable team. It could be particularly effective at making Pittsburgh’s offense even more one-dimensional than usual. The Gamblers’ defense is especially good against the run (84.7 YPG allowed).

The Maulers’ 31-point output in Week 7 is a bit of a mirage. Two of the scores came as direct result of kickoff returns. Pittsburgh still doesn’t have a viable running game outside of quarterback Troy Williams. However, the front seven may be the toughest Houston RB Mark Thompson has faced all season – the Maulers allow a USFL-low 77.7 rushing yards per contest.

The Gamblers enter as 3-point favorites on the road.

Philadelphia Stars at Birmingham Stallions

The Stars recorded their third straight win in Week 7 by edging the Maulers 37-31. The Stallions took sole possession of first place in the South Division with a 24-20 victory over the Breakers.

The Stars get their first crack at the Stallions since last summer’s USFL Championship Game while riding a three-game winning streak. Philadelphia’s troubles protecting Case Cookus most of the season have subsided in the last two games. And Birmingham’s pass rush has been surprisingly ordinary (11 sacks), teeing up the quarterback for another potentially solid day.

The Stallions have won back-to-back games and QB Alex McGough has been excellent with ball security, throwing only three interceptions across 178 pass attempts. He’s also rushed for 318 yards and four touchdowns at 6.5 yards per carry. He, along with lead back CJ Marable, face a Stars defense surrendering a USFL-high 132 rushing yards per contest.

The Stallions are robust 6-point favorites for what could be one of the week’s most competitive games.

Memphis Showboats at New Jersey Generals

The Showboats notched their fourth straight win in exciting fashion, scoring a 23-20 victory over the Gamblers in Week 7. The Generals lost their fourth straight, enduring a 25-22 defeat at the hands of the Panthers.

Memphis quarterback Cole Kelley isn’t lighting up the stat sheet, but the young signal-caller is getting enough done to complement an improving defense and solid ground attack. The Generals present a daunting challenge, as they’re allowing the second-fewest total yards per game (264.1) and have accrued 17 sacks.

The Generals saw De’Andre Johnson go down with a head injury in the fourth quarter in Week 7, so Kyle Lauletta may have the starting quarterback role all to himself in Week 8. Memphis has been improving on defense and has lowered its rushing yards per game allowed to under 100 (99.3). That could make life difficult for New Jersey star running back Darius Victor.

Despite the Showboats’ red-hot streak, the Generals are listed as 2-point favorites.

Michigan Panthers at New Orleans Breakers

The Panthers snapped their funk with a 25-22 win over the Generals in Week 7, while the Breakers suffered a third consecutive loss, stumbling against the Stallions by a 24-20 score.

The Panthers’ Josh Love is coming off his two best games of the season, and he now takes on a Breakers defense that’s been a bit softer of late. New Orleans surrendered just under 70% passing to the Stallions’ McGough in Week 7, setting up Love for another potentially productive game.

New Orleans continues to boast an impressive array of offensive weapons, but the Panthers have the talent to make life especially difficult on the passing game. Michigan yield the second-fewest passing yards per game (167.7) and has tallied 15 sacks. However, the outlook is a lot brighter for RB Wes Hills, as the Panthers allow 4.7 yards per carry and have conceded nine rushing TDs.

The Breakers are installed as 3.5-point favorites despite their recent struggles.

Best of luck betting USFL odds in Week 8.
