The second season of the USFL is underway, and sportsbooks have already released USFL odds for Week 2. The ledger kicks off Saturday afternoon with a Houston Gamblers-New Orleans Breakers clash and concludes with a Michigan Panthers-Philadelphia Stars showdown on Sunday evening that could be an early preview of an eventual USFL Championship Game. USFL Week 2 Odds

Houston Gamblers at New Orleans Breakers

The Gamblers looked out of sorts on offense in Week 1 under 2022 holdover Kenji Behar, falling to the Panthers by a 29-13 score. The Breakers looked mostly cohesive in their first game under CFL transplant McLeod Bethel-Thompson, leading to a 22-15 win.

Behar threw for only 109 yards and two interceptions in the opener and running back T.J. Pledger couldn’t get any traction in the run game. Meanwhile, Houston’s defense allowed an absurd 88.5 percent completion rate to Jordan Love and Carson Strong, along with a combined 90 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries to Stevie Scott III and Reggie Corbin. The bad news for the Gamblers is the Breakers can attack with a similarly balanced approach.

That attacking offense features two very impressive holdover receivers in Jonathan Adams and Johnnie Dixon, as well as former wideout turned tight end Sage Surratt, who can wreak havoc with his speed down the seam. Anthony Jones is also a workhorse back that can do damage as a safety valve out of the backfield as well.

Given Week 1 results, it isn’t surprising to see the Breakers as 5.5-point favorites.

Memphis Showboats at Birmingham Stallions

The Showboats put together a balanced attack in Week 1 but couldn’t quite keep up with the Stars, dropping a 27-23 decision. The Stallions began their title defense in fine form, upending the Generals by a 27-10 score.

Memphis is operating with a new quarterback in Brady White this season, and the accomplished college signal-caller was impressive with 182 passing yards and two passing touchdowns along with 29 rushing yards on four carries. NFL alum Alex Collins rushed 14 times for 63 yards and a touchdown and added five receptions, establishing him as an early candidate for one of the better two-way threats at running back.

The Stallions’ 17-point win featured strong play from the quarterback duo of J’Mar Smith and Alex McGough, who once again worked virtually seamlessly in splitting snaps. The lack of punch from the ground game – CJ Marable and Bo Scarbrough combined for just 23 yards on 11 carries – is concerning, however, and the defense could also be much more challenged by Memphis’ offense this week than it was against a Generals squad in the opener.

The Stallions unsurprisingly check in as the biggest favorites of the week at 7.5 points.

New Jersey Generals at Pittsburgh Maulers

The Generals got poor quarterback play from 2022 holdover De’Andre Johnson and couldn’t keep up defensively either, leading to a 27-10 season-opening loss to the Stallions. The Maulers also struggled offensively, as they fell to the Breakers by a 22-15 score.

Much like the Stallions, the Generals operated a two-quarterback system with efficacy in 2022, but Johnson couldn’t do his part in Week 1 while sharing snaps with Dakota Prukop. The latter did offer some encouraging play, however, completing 13 of 17 passes for 148 yards and adding a rushing touchdown. Darius Victor was also highly efficient with 89 yards on just eight carries, but a Maulers front that held Anthony Jones to 2.4 yards per carry in Week 1 could prove to be a much stiffer challenge.

The Maulers will likely need to see either James Morgan or Troy Williams – who went a combined 10 for 27 for 81 yards against the Breakers – take the reins of the offense and run with it to have any chance in this matchup. Dragging down the chances of such is the fact Pittsburgh seems to have no viable ground game to speak of, as holdovers Garrett Groshek and Madre London failed to even crack the 40-yard mark combined.

The Generals are somewhat surprisingly narrow 3-point favorites.

Michigan Panthers at Philadelphia Stars

The Panthers impressed with a balanced attack in Week 1, leading to a 29-13 win over the Gamblers. The Stars, believed to be a serious contender for the USFL Championship, opened their season with an entertaining 27-23 win over the Showboats.

Michigan’s first game under new head coach Mike Nolan was a rousing success, and not just on the defensive side of the ball. The Panthers racked up 327 total yards at 6.1 yards per play thanks in large part to the play of primary signal-caller Josh Love, who completed 18 of 20 passes for 215 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Stevie Scott III and Reggie Corbin were also very effective on the ground, while the defense recorded two picks and four sacks.

However, the Stars will undoubtedly test the Panthers in every facet. Philadelphia’s diverse, aggressive offense picked up where it left off in 2022 in the opener. Case Cookus showed no ill effects from the broken leg he’d suffered in last July’s title game, threw three touchdown passes and was also the leading rusher with 31 yards. Philly’s defense, which recorded seven picks and 24 sacks a season ago, did look a bit vulnerable through both the ground and air, however, which makes the matchup against a well-stocked Panthers offense a bit dangerous. In what could turn out to be the best game of the week, the Stars are 3-point favorites.

Best of luck betting USFL odds in Week 2.
