USA vs. Morocco Olympic Soccer Quarterfinal preview
For the first time since 2000, the U.S. Men’s National Team plays in the Olympic knockout stage. After being blanked 3-0 by host France in its opening Group A match, the U.S. ripped off 4-1 and 3-0 wins over New Zealand and Guinea, respectively. The +4 goal differential ranked third-best among all countries and best among second-place finishers. Five different Americans netted goals in the three games, led by Djordje Mihailovic (twice on PK) and Kevin Paredes (two goals vs. Guinea).
Early scoring has been the name of the game for the U.S. In the two most recent matches, the USMNT scored five of its seven goals in the first 31 minutes of the match while just one came after the 60th minute. As underdogs in the quarterfinal, expect the U.S. to again be aggressive and try to build an early lead.
Morocco knocked off Argentina and Iraq, losing to Ukraine in between. Each match came down to the end, with Morocco beating the Argentinians 2-1 and Iraqis 3-0; they fell to the Ukranians, 2-1. FW Soufiane Rahimi was a goal machine in the group stage and poses the biggest threat for the U.S. Rahimi scored at least once in each match – twice on PKs – for four total goals. He accounted for every goal scored in two matches, against Argentina and Ukraine.
The Moroccans nearly went 3-0. However, Ukraine netted a game-winning goal in the 90′ +8 to seal a 2-1 victory.
The nations have met four times, all in international friendlies. Morocco is 3-1-0 in those matches, with the U.S. notching its first win in June 2022.
