USA Medal Count: Odds To Win Most Gold Medals

One more important note for this year’s games is the addition of 33 new medal events in Tokyo. The 2020 Summer Olympics will have 339 events in 33 sports.

Team USA is a heavy favorite to win gold in several events, including men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s soccer , women’s gymnastics and several track and field events.

Aug. 6 update: After pacing far below the medal count and looking likely to come in under their market expectation, Team USA has rebounded somewhat in the past few days. Several wrestling medals, some athletics success and the advancement of Team USA Basketball (men’s and women’s) to both finals has Team USA position to go over once again. The FiveThirtyEight projections now expect Team USA to add 16 medals to the 98 already won for a total of 114.

Now 19 medals ahead of China, Team USA appears assured of finishing atop the overall count.

The big remaining question: can Team USA catch China in the gold medal race? The Chinese have seen their lead trimmed from seven to five, 36 golds to 31, heading into the final weekend. Team USA was a huge pre-tournament favorite to lead the gold medal count, and anyone who played the chalk has a huge sweat now.

USA Medal Count: Summer Olympics Since 1996

If you only know one thing before placing any action on Olympic medal odds by country, know that the U.S. has owned the summer games with Wayne-Gretzky-like dominance since pretty much forever. The Americans have the most total medals in the history of the event with 2,552. 1,022 came in the form of gold medals. There’s clearly historical context supporting the Americans’ odds as this year’s heavy favorites to win the most gold medals (-1000 at DraftKings) and the most medals overall (-750 at DraftKings).

In the last six Olympic Games, the U.S. has won the total medal count every year, winning the most gold medals in five out of those six Olympiads. Their only gold medal count defeat came at the hands of host country China in 2008.

At DraftKings, the over/under for Team USA medals in Tokyo is 112.5 (-134 over/-106 under) or 113.5 (+125 over/-177 under). The total for gold medals sits at 43.5 (over -143/under +100) or 44.5 (over +115/-162 under).
