Dream Team Pounds Serbia, Serves Notice
Perhaps Team USA really was treating those exhibitions like exhibitions.
After a couple of ho-hum performances against South Sudan and Germany, the modern Dream Team came out and made a statement in its Olympic opener. Old rivals LeBron James and Kevin Durant shot a combined 17-for-22 for 44 points. Team USA shot 56% from the shorter 3-point line, and the game was effectively over before the fourth quarter started.
Still, questions remain. Joel Embiid had another rough game, finishing 2-for-5 and logging just 11 minutes. He seems poorly suited to the FIBA ruleset.
Overall, two of the four factors (turnovers and free throws) went Serbia’s way.

Can South Sudan Repeat Exhibition Performance Against Team USA?
If Serbia, one of the best teams in the world with arguably the best player in the world, served as mere roadkill, what chance does South Sudan have? Their Olympic basketball roster includes just two NBA players, one of whom, JT Thor, isn’t a slam dunk to get a roster spot this coming season.
However, the South Sudanese appear to have been significantly underrated so far. Not only did they give Team USA a scare in a narrow 101-100 defeat in exhibitions, but they outperformed the market by 10 points in their opening win over Puerto Rico.
While Bol Bol is their star player on paper, Carlik Jones showed out in the aforementioned exhibition loss in a big way. The former Chicago Bull made a statement that he’s ready for another turn in the NBA with a 15-11-11 line. He hit a big shot down the stretch that could have given South Sudan the win, only for James to answer with the final points of the game.
South Sudan shot 14-for-33 from deep overall.
Still, the market remains skeptical South Sudan can give Team USA another fight, hanging a monster line for this one.
