US Open Betting Odds Favor Medvedev After Djokovic Withdraws

Novak Djokovic finds himself stonewalled from entering the U.S. because of his refusal to take a COVID-19 vaccine. Hence, he has withdrawn from the major tennis tournament just days before it starts, altering the US Open odds board in the process.

Djokovic initially was the clear market favorite — found between +125 and +150 at sportsbooks in the days leading up his withdrawal. With the 21-time Grand Slam singles winner out of the way, the board looks pretty open with Daniil Medvedev the new favorite around +225.

Not Djokovic’s First Issue With COVID-19 Vaccination

Djokovic and COVID-19 have had a thorny history.

In June 2020, Djokovic hosted a charity event despite much of the tennis world still in a holding pattern due to the pandemic. Several attendees contracted COVID-19, ultimately causing a cancellation and prompting Djokovic to issue a public apology.

Earlier this year, Djokovic had planned to play the Australian Open. Although Australia has a more strict border entry policy than most nations, Djokovic believed he’d been cleared for entry with a medical exemption after having already tested positive for COVID (and therefore having antibodies) in previous months. He wound up detained at the border.

A media circus followed, which even saw high-profile media outlets scrutinizing and questioning the authenticity of Djokovic’s positive test. Ultimately, the country denied his visa. That cost him a chance to compete in a Grand Slam that he’s won nine times.

Now, his vaccination status blocks him from U.S. entry. While New York has rescinded a policy that notably cost NBA star Kyrie Irving much of his 2021-22 season, certain travel mandates remain in place. In regards to import:

“Non-U.S. citizen, non-U.S. immigrants: You must show proof of being fully vaccinated with the primary series of an accepted COVID-19 vaccine before you board your flight to the United States. Only limited exceptions apply.”

Evidently, Djokovic does meet the requirement for a limited exception.
