Rory McIlroy is the U.S. Open odds on favorite after winning the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday, but that isn’t where public nor sharp bettors are looking to place their wagers. Below, Jeff Sherman, the Westgate SuperBook vice president of risk management and golf oddsmaker, breaks down how the handle and ticket count are shaping up.

U.S. Open Odds: Tackling Outright Bets
Golf majors always lure bettors to the counter, and Sherman noted that U.S. Open odds will deliver the second-biggest handle among golf events in the calendar year (behind The Masters).
For U.S. Open outright odds at +20000 or lower, Bryson DeChambeau () is the Westgate’s largest liability — followed by Brooks Koepka () and Dustin Johnson ().
Sherman hasn’t seen any notable wagers on DeChambeau or Koepka, but their price tags are high enough where their names alone is appealing. Johnson, however, has been backed by sharp bettors.
Keep in mind, DeChambeau failed to make the cut in four of final five events before joining the Saudi Arabian-funded LIV Golf tour on June 10, and Johnson jumped on board too. Meanwhile, Koepka has played in just a single non-major event since March.
We haven’t seen anything close to the same golfer when he (Koepka) was winning everything,” Sherman said. “Everyone focuses on the majors and injuries, but his form hasn’t been the same. You’d expect to see him around 20-to-1 (if he was right), yet we just took at $1,000 bet on him at 50-to-1.”
Which U.S. Open Odds Have The Most Value?
Within the current odds board, the veteran oddsmaker was quick to point to Xander Schauffele (), and he’s also the most popular outright bet among the “wise guys” at the Westgate. Schauffele has tallied a top-10 finish in each of his last five U.S. Open appearances.
“Xander is in good form, and that’s a nice price, but I didn’t get involved with him for outright bets because I’ve bet about eight golfers over the last couple of months,” Sherman said. “But for matchups (wagers), I’m on Xander over Cameron Smith and Xander over (Jordan) Spieth because I expect him to play so well in this tournament.”
Below are four other golfers who sharp bettors are targeting in the outright, derivative and matchup betting markets:
- Tony Finau ()
- Dustin Johnson ()
- Harold Varner III ()
- Aaron Wise ()
