Underdog NFL Picks: Rams vs. Lions (Sunday Night Football)
Here we have a rematch of Wild Card Weekend as the Rams head back to Detroit for yet another Matt Stafford reunion game. The Rams have uncertainty at the running back position, as presumed starter Kyren Williams is also on punt return duty, while the Lions have their usual uncertainty about whether WR No. 2 through No. 5 are any good.
Because of that, I’m going to avoid the uncertainties.
Amon-Ra St. Brown Higher Than 86.5 Receiving Yards
Amon-Ra went over this number 11 of 17 times in the regular season last year and again on Wild Card Weekend. More interestingly, he did it all with a variety of maladies, from a torn oblique to a toe injury to hand-foot and mouth disease at various times. Now that he’s presumably healthier than he was last year, he should cruise to this number again.
One of the other reasons for optimism about St. Brown is the paucity of other options. Jameson Williams is a nice high-upside play, but he’s caught 25 passes in 18 games over 2 seasons. The price of extending St. Brown and Goff at their current contracts is a weak set of other WRs. That might come back to haunt the Lions in real life at some point, but that’s really good for St. Brown this week.
Cooper Kupp Lower Than 64.5 Receiving Yards
My first instinct here was to bet on Kupp to do well, but the stats don’t justify the number. Kupp went over this number only 4 times last season, but more importantly, only turned nine targets into five catches for 27 yards in the Wild Card round. Kupp’s explosive stat lines came from the ability to take extremely high target loads and break off low-aDOT routes for big plays. He seems to have lost half a step, which limits both the separation he can get and what he can do with the ball.
Even if he’s more healthy this year than he was at the start of last year, he’s a year older. He’s a prime candidate to underperform.
Best of luck with Week 1 Underdog NFL picks!
