Underdog fantasy picks: Gonzaga at San Francisco

With the Bulldogs squarely on the bubble for March Madness odds, this game certainly fits the must-win cliche.

Regarding points in the paint allowed per game, the Dons rank in the 95th percentile. Thus, Gonzaga would seem to be at a disadvantage on paper, considering they’d prefer to veer away from relying on perimeter shooting.

However, the Bulldogs’ interior attack got the best of them in the first meeting on Jan. 25. Not only did Graham Ike and Antone Watson combine for 37 points in the victory, but they also combined for 20 free-throw attempts.

Between the two bigs, Watson is best positioned to score higher than 13.5 points, which is what he is listed at for Underdog picks. Users are actually getting a discount with the 6-foot-8, 228-pound senior. Although Watson is producing the second-most points per game (14.8 ppg) on the ‘Zags, he’s averaging just 13.0 ppg over the last two games.

On the flip side, San Francisco center Jonathan Mogbo notching lower than 9.5 rebounds is worth a look. While he accrued 11 of them in the first meeting, including three of them on the offensive glass, Gonzaga was ultra-efficient with its fast-break offense. Thus, I expect the Dons to value transition defense over generating a bevy of second-chance opportunities.
