Underdog fantasy picks: Alabama at ole miss

Although the Crimson Tide are coming off an embarrassing loss at Kentucky, don’t lose sight of what this game means for Ole Miss. With the Rebels firmly on the bubble for March Madness odds, I expect an all-out effort, especially after consecutive defeats.

Ever since guiding Texas Tech to the 2019 Final Four, Ole Miss coach Chris Beard has been known for his no-middle defense. This scheme is positioned exactly like the average college basketball connoisseur would expect. It aims to steer dribble penetration away from the lane.

In particular, the Rebels will presumably gear their attention toward Alabama point guard Mark Sears, whose Underdog points total is lined at 20.5. The Tide’s leading scorer may wind up going over this number, yet I anticipate him as a more pass-first point guard in this contest, especially with how Beard’s defense is constructed. Sears is also an underrated rebounder for his 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame, amassing 4.1 boards per game.

Therefore the market labeled “higher than 9.0 rebounds + assists” is worth considering for Sears.

More Potential Underdog Picks

Alabama wing Rylan Griffen is an intriguing candidate to compile higher than 2.5 triples. No-middle defenses typically surrender their fair share of quality 3-point looks, and Ole Miss is no exception. It’s allowed the second-most open perimeter looks in the SEC.

Granted, Griffen is shooting just 4-of-16 (25.0%) from behind the arc over the last two games. However, he’s delivered a 38.8% clip on the season, and this game represents as good of a bounce-back opportunity as any. The second of these two Underdog picks is even listed as a scorcher, which is intended to increase a customer’s max payout.

Remember that a scorcher must be correct to receive the payout increase. If the scorcher voids or ties, Underdog users won’t receive the increase weaved into that scorcher — even if the entry is insured.

Like Griffen, Ole Miss guard Matthew Murrell is another buy-low candidate to consider after his foul-plagued outing against No. 18 South Carolina. He should rack up higher than 17.5 points in this uptempo affair.

My raw numbers make this game closer to Alabama -6.5. Similarly, Haslametrics projects a score of 86.9-79.5, favoring the Tide. One digit or so may not seem like a sizeable edge, but every point is valuable for Underdog picks or otherwise.

Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia all outlaw wagers on college basketball props. Plus, 10 others match the guidance of banning in-state school prop betting.

Virginia enables betting on in-state schools but not props on in-state players. The remaining states with sportsbooks permit betting on college props, including in-state teams.
