Underdog College Basketball betting: Texas at Houston

When these programs squared off on Jan. 29, the Cougars squeaked out a four-point overtime win. However, the Longhorns covered the point spread. Both teams have benefited from a week-long layoff — a rarity in college basketball — before the rematch.

In Rodney Terry’s first full season as the Texas men’s basketball coach, the Longhorns’ defensive efficiency has dipped significantly over their last five games. In particular, they rank in the 21st percentile of the percentage of points allowed in the paint. They’ve also struggled with limiting offensive rebounding opportunities, ranking in the 28th percentile of second-chance points surrendered (via CBB Analytics).

Moreover, three of those matchups came against this same Cougars team, TCU, and Iowa State. All three of them are in the upper echelon of the Big 12 in both areas. Hence, Texas’ interior defense is clearly its biggest liability.

With that in mind, 6-foot-7 senior J’Wan Roberts, who polished off a 14-point, 8-rebound outing in their first meeting, is primed for another fine performance at home. As long as you can grab his rebounding total at higher than 7.5, it’s worth considering for Underdog betting. He should be pretty fresh for this game, to boot, which means his minutes won’t be an issue — unless he’s in foul trouble.

Surprisingly, Roberts has been called for the second-fewest fouls per game among any player in Houston’s rotation. That makes him even more of an alluring option.

Another Underdog Betting Candidate

Unlike the Longhorns, the Cougars’ interior defense is a strength. The perimeter is a different story.

While they’ve held their opponents to 28.7% from behind the arc, they still allow a well-above-average 3-point attempt rate. Texas combo guard Max Abmas would normally represent the key to exploiting that, but Houston’s elite ball pressure will make it difficult for him. His 2-of-8 shooting display versus the Cougars was a prime example of that.

Considering “juice” or “vig” doesn’t apply for Underdog betting, lower than 3.5 3-pointers made for Abmas is another option.

Per my college basketball power rankings, my raw numbers make this game closer to Houston -10. Conversely, Haslametrics projects a score of 71.8-60.0, favoring the Cougars. One digit may not seem like a significant edge, but every point is valuable in Underdog betting or otherwise.
