Not only are UNC odds among the favorites to cut down the nets at , but they've also reeled in 46.8% of the national title bets at BetMGM in North Carolina. Many North Carolinians support the Tar Heels, but it's a staggering percentage since Duke is firmly in the mix.
Duke Support Lagging In Home State
The Blue Devils have failed to crack the top five of BetMGM's most-bet teams (total tickets wagered). They've accrued the seventh-highest ticket count (4.3%):
- UNC (46.8%)
- UConn (10.6%)
- Houston (9.0%)
- Kentucky (5.9%)
- Purdue (5.9%)
While we're only a few days into the NC sports betting launch, the low percentage of Duke bets is still surprising. For reference, UNC odds opened the campaign at +3000 in other states where BetMGM is an operator. The Tar Heels were the preseason co-favorite to win it all last season after falling short against Kansas in the 2022 national title game.
As NC residents well know, they were one of the biggest all-time disappointments thanks to missing the 2023 NCAA Tournament entirely.
Nevertheless, UNC has rebounded nicely with the additions of Harrison Ingram (Stanford) and Cormac Ryan (Notre Dame) via the transfer portal. Ryan was the hero in the regular-season finale, scoring a game-high 31 points in an "upset" win at Duke as five-point underdogs.
