UNC Basketball Odds

Among Saturday’s college basketball odds, No. 7 North Carolina is stationed as a favorite versus Virginia Tech. The Hokies are sizeable underdogs to win outright. Will the Tar Heels cover the point spread, or are they set up to disappoint once again? Let’s delve into UNC basketball odds vs. Virginia Tech, including valuable metrics and matchups to hone in on.

UNC Basketball odds: spread, moneyline, total

The Tar Heel State announced North Carolina online sportsbooks will go live on March 11 — right in time for March Madness odds.

Will North Carolina Rebound?

The literal meaning of that is already expected. During ACC play, the Hokies showcase a bottom-12 rebounding rate at each end. However, the Tar Heels must figuratively do so as well, coming off an outright loss at Syracuse as an eight-point favorite.

The Orange dominated offensively, manufacturing a 70.8% effective field goal percentage (eFG%). That is equivalent to the second-highest eFG% by an opponent in the KenPom era, which dates back to 1999. Essentially, UNC’s defense made history — and not the good kind.

North Carolina has surrendered a 36.8% 3-point clip since Jan. 27. While its defense deserved some praise before this stretch, its prowess was widely exaggerated. Then again, the Tar Heels could receive a dose of position regression in that department at any point. It likely won’t come against Virginia Tech, though.

The Hokies have produced a top-70 perimeter scoring rate across D-I. Unsurprisingly, Mike Young’s motion offense lends itself toward shots from behind the arc. If Virginia Tech is efficient should continue to make the Tar Heels pay on catch-and-shoot looks. Hunter Catoor & Co. tally those types of shots at a top-50 frequency, to boot.

Metrics aside, there’s always a chance that UNC conjures up a standout motivational performance. If you’re unfamiliar with situational spots, this term attempts to uncover conditions in which programs have exceeded or underperformed their normal level of play — relative to the moneyline or spread. Considering the bounce-back opportunity for Hubert Davis’ team, it would certainly apply to this game.

Utilizing Power Ratings

Per my college basketball power rankings, these conference foes are separated by a tick below eight points. After incorporating a slight home-court advantage at the Dean Dome, the opening spread of UNC -11 appears spot on — given the situational spot for North Carolina.

Similarly, Haslametrics approximated a final score of 80.5-69.1, favoring UNC basketball odds.
