UNC College Basketball Betting Odds & Player Props: Tar Heels On Upset Alert At Miami?
UNC Basketball odds: spread, moneyline, total
The Tar Heel State announced North Carolina sportsbooks will go live on March 11 — in time for the tip-off of March Madness odds.
Will Tar Heels Rebound?
On the surface, North Carolina’s loss to Clemson wasn’t surprising after its win over arch-rival Duke. As I noted in Tuesday’s UNC betting guide, it was a letdown spot. Still, the reports are glaring, especially with players arriving fashionably late to shootaround. A veteran team should learn from this mishap, but nothing is for certain.
Moreover, the Tar Heels have dominated their ACC opponents on the glass — with the exception of the Tigers. They yielded 11 offensive rebounds while failing to accrue double digits themselves in that department. UNC center Armando Bacot is rarely outworked in the paint, but Clemson’s PJ Hall and Ian Schiefflin represent one of the nation’s better frontcourt tandems, producing second-chance opportunities at a top-55 rate.
Enter the Hurricanes, which haven’t been nearly as effective in that regard. However, Jim Larrañaga’s bunch boasts the perimeter shooting to give the Tar Heels fits. Led by standout junior guard Nijel Pack, Miami has tallied the 91st-highest scoring rate from behind the arc.
On the flip side, North Carolina’s defense may continue to suffer the plague of 3-point regression. After allowing conference opponents to shoot 22.5% from deep in its first nine games of 2024, they’ve surrendered a 37.8% clip in their last three games.
Generally speaking, perimeter defense can be a luck-based metric when teams shoot at absurdly high or low percentages. Although North Carolina’s defense has undoubtedly made strides, its metrics were certainly inflated to begin the year.
Utilizing Power Ratings
Per my college basketball power rankings, these conference foes are separated by a tad below seven points. After factoring in home-court advantage via the Watsco Center, the opening spread of UNC -4.5 is roughly spot on, according to my raw numbers.
Conversely, Haslametrics projects a score of 79.4-72.9, favoring UNC basketball odds. Erik Haslam, who runs the analytics site, will return to the Outside Shots podcast once conference tournaments tip off. Justin Perri, the content lead at ShotQuality, was on the latest episode to preview the weekend slate. Listen to the show below.
