UNC Basketball Odds

Among this week’s ACC matchups, No. 3 North Carolina is a nine-point home favorite against unranked Clemson. Understandably, the Tigers are sizeable underdogs. Will the Tar Heels cover the point spread, or can Brad Brownell’s group keep it competitive? Let’s assess UNC basketball odds vs. Clemson, including key metrics and matchups to hone in on.

UNC Basketball odds: spread, moneyline, total

The Tar Heel State announced North Carolina sports gambling will go live on March 11 — in time for the tip-off of March Madness odds.

Situational Spot Favors Clemson

If you’re unfamiliar with situational spots, this term attempts to uncover conditions in which programs have exceeded or underperformed their normal level of play — relative to the moneyline or spread. For one, the Tigers lost six of their last nine matchups. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels have won 11 of their last 12 games. Hence, this contest represents a buy-low, sell-high spot on Clemson — for those who buy into this notion.

PJ Hall & Co. are out for revenge after UNC beat them by double-digits at Littlejohn Coliseum on Jan. 6. The Tar Heels are also coming off an emotional win over arch-rival Duke, insinuating they could be in for a letdown.

For reference, the opening odds showcased the Tigers as 8.5-point road underdogs.

Perimeter Payback?

In their last meeting, Clemson delivered a 1-of-18 shooting performance from behind the arc. Efficiency, or lack thereof, has been a significant storyline for both teams this season. For starters, the Tigers have tallied the second-lowest 3-point clip (30.2%) in conference play. Ironically, their marksmen carried them to an 11-1 non-conference record.

On the flip side, the Tar Heels’ defense from around the arc ranks No. 29 nationally, surrendering a 29.7% clip. But according to Synergy, they’ve received a bevy of positive variance in that department. In particular, opponents have missed an above-average amount of open 3-pointers. If Clemson’s five-out attack, including the aforementioned Hall, accrues some much-needed shooting luck, it should keep pace with North Carolina throughout.

Utilizing Power Ratings

Per my college basketball power rankings, these conference foes are separated by a tick below six points. After accounting for home-court advantage via the Dean Smith Center, the initial spread is a smidge inflated, according to my raw numbers.

Conversely, Haslametrics approximated a final score of 80.4-70.5, favoring UNC basketball odds.
