Wales once again have to come through the playoff if they’re going to make it back to the World Cup. But this Wales vs. Bosnia matchup is a different situation for the Dragons than four years prior. Now the Welsh know what’s possible after qualifying for the 2022 edition of football’s greatest tournament.

They’re also trying to do it with a different lineup than what got them there four years ago. Gareth Bale has since retired, while Aaron Ramsey’s not played in several months. Instead, it’s Harry Wilson, Brennan Johnson and Daniel James leading this side.

And that group has proven tough to beat in Cardiff, unless facing a top-quality opponent. Bosnia is not at that level and hasn’t been for some time. The Bosnians are looking for their second World Cup appearance, and their qualifying campaign was a mixed bag. They’d already have qualified if they’d defeated Austria, but they had to settle for a 1-1 draw. That left them two points short, points they also left on the table by drawing with Cyprus.

Bosnia has played inconsistently away from its home soil. With Wales winners in four of their past six home matches, the hosts look like the stronger selection.

Wales know what’s at stake here. If they win this match, they’d get to host a winner-take-all match with Italy or Northern Ireland next time out. Wales have won three of their past four matches in this type of situation, and backing the Welsh to get the win here seems a wise decision.

But the defense has not been there. Of 12 Welsh matches in 2025, nine of them saw Wales concede. The exceptions were Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein, neither of whom offer much in the way of attack.

Bosnia will press the issue far more. The Bosnians have scored in 11 consecutive matches, dating back to a 7-0 thrashing at Germany’s hands. That it’s taken the likes of Germany to keep a clean sheet against this side says Wales will be hard-pressed to keep Bosnia off the score sheet. A Welsh win with both sides scoring looks like the right move.
