United States get their 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament underway when they face Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Group D.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are desperate to have a strong tournament, and they head into their opening matchup as the favourites to see off the Paraguayans in the City of Angels. However, the South American side could be a tough nut to crack.

USA will go up against Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey in their group. Going by the current World Cup Group D odds, United States and the Turks are expected to battle it out for first place.

However, ruling out any nation at this World Cup is unwise, as all four countries will fancy their chances of securing a top-two place in Group D and automatic qualification to the Round of 32. This group is one of the hardest to predict.

The Stars and Stripes have reached the Round of 16 in three of the last four World Cups. However, they have won just one game in each of those tournaments. The furthest they have gone in modern times is the last eight in South Korea & Japan in 2002.

Paraguay are one of the more unpredictable nations at this World Cup. On their day, the South Americans can beat anyone, but inconsistency is often an issue.

The Paraguayans are featuring in a World Cup for the first time since 2010, where they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa. Instead of building on finishing eighth in the world, Paraguay failed to qualify for the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups.

These two countries last locked horns in an international friendly at Subaru Park in Pennsylvania last year, with USA running out 2-1 winners. Folarin Balogun scored the winner 20 minutes from time.

United States vs Paraguay Predictions

Since Paraguay’s 1-0 friendly win in Nashville back in 2011, America have won the following three meetings by a single-goal margin. The last competitive game came at the 2016 Copa America, which USA won 1-0 thanks to a Clint Dempsey goal.

On paper, there is not a lot to separate these two footballing nations. They both have attacking talent and a fair share of experience, and this first-round World Cup fixture is likely to be a tight affair.

A one-goal margin could be enough to settle it in California, and we like the look of 17/2 for the co-hosts to win 2-1.

All eyes will be on Christian Pulisic in United States’ opening fixture. Even though former international defender Marcelo Balboa says USA are not totally reliant on the AC Milan superstar, Pulisic remains the poster boy of US soccer and will have a huge part to play this summer.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea man had a solid season for Milan in Italy, reaching double figures in goals. Also, he has scored 33 times for the national side and made 86 appearances since his senior debut in 2016. For the last decade, “Captain America” has been USA’s main man.

Big things are expected of Pulisic at the 2026 World Cup, and the 27-year-old is looking to hit the ground running. He is the favourite to open the scoring for the States, but there is excellent value in 19/10 for USA’s playmaker to score anytime at SoFi Stadium.
