Chepstow Best Bet: The Mighty Celt at 4.02pm
The feature race at the Welsh venue is at 4.02pm, and I am very much looking forward to this contest. You can make a case for quite a few individuals here, with Masked Man popular in the antepost markets, and this unexposed sort could easily be ahead of the accessor off a rating of 132. The 5-year-old has winning form at Chepstow and could still be on an upward curve for the Twiston-Davies team.
Last year's winner Rambo T is back again and looks dangerously well handicapped off a mark of 134, now 3lb lower than when battling to success 12 months ago. However, he appears to have been deserted by Sean Bowen, which is slightly perturbing. However, the capable Lewis Saunders is in the saddle claiming 5lb, so from a weights and measures point of view, Rambo T could well be at an each-way price for a horse who boasts an unblemished record over Course and Distance,
The individual I am most interested in is the Harry and Dan Skelton representative: THE MIGHTY CELT. The ex-French competitor is still only 4 years old, and has the propensity to be significantly better than a mark of 131 now moving up in distance to tackle this extended 2m3f trip. He ran really well to finish sixth in a messy renewal of the Fred Winter, where he stayed on nicely up the hill, and then again at Aintree over an extended 2m he looked outpaced over that trip on a flat track before making late headway. Fitness has to be taken on trust, but it rarely is an issue from this team, so one would imagine that The Mighty Celt is fired up ahead of his seasonal reappearance/first start since April.
He will need to settle in the early exchanges, but he has shaped as though he has been crying out for this thorough test of stamina, and looks to have major claims here, with underfoot conditions to suit. Team Skelton will be throwing everything into the autumn/winter challenge in pursuit of breaking Martin Pipe's record tally of 243 winners in a season, which has stood for 25 years. Check your each-way terms and conditions, as the unexposed Mighty Celt looks to have plenty more to offer and looks a rock-solid each-way contender for the Warwickshire base.
4.02pm Chepstow Prediction: The Mighty Celt (6/1, bet365)
Ed Quigley's Next Best Bet for Newmarket: Rock Montreal at 2.25pm
We are taking a look at the Group 3 Autumn Stakes here, and I think the Roger Varian-trained ROCK MONTREAL is one to keep onside ahead of this 1m event. The Blue Point colt has shown good form so far, winning in nice fashion on debut at Yarmouth, then staying on strongly to finish second in a Listed contest at Doncaster, last seen. That race was over 7f, and it looked as though he needed every yard of that on the day; from a visual perspective, this step up to 1m looks as though it can only suit.
The collateral form of that race has worked out very well, with Nabati, who was one place behind Rock Montreal in that Listed encounter, having since gone on to score in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes, so there is a fair amount of robustness to his form, and he looks an exciting type. The Roger Varian team have been ticking over nicely, and this combination has to be feared with a red-hot William Buick in the saddle.
