Horse Racing Tips Today – Ed Quigley’s Best Bets for Saturday 30 May
Top pundit Ed Quigley has been knocking in the winners lately, and is back with his best bets for a busy day of competitive action on Saturday...
Carlisle 2.33 - Washington Heights
This will be fast and furious, as we have Listed action over the flying five furlongs here. Starlust is the highest rated horse in the line-up, but has been over the track for almost a year, so that complicates things. Washington Heights has struggled in better company, including at Group 1 level over the course of his last few starts, but was in the winner's enclosure the last time that he ran at Listed level, and I think he will be tuned up for this. Fast ground suits, and I also think that the drop in trip back to the minimum is also a big tick in the box. This is a tricky puzzle to try and solve, but if Washington Heights brings his best to the table, then he is more than capable of getting involved here at the business end of proceedings. Tom Eaves takes the ride for the in-form Kevin Ryan team, and this combination gets the nod from me.
Carlisle 3.10 - Estrange (win), Naga e/w
This looks a belter of a Group 3 at Carlisle, where some classy Fillies and Mares will be doing battle over 1m3f. Estrange is the class act in this line up, and if she is fully revved up after a 224-day absence then she will take all the beating. The 5-year-old is oddcilly rated 116, and is the stand-out performer in this line-up, having been successful at Group 3 and Group 2 level last season (including this race when staged at Haydock), with her two defeats coming when chasing home superior opposition in Group 1 company. She is a strong traveller who enjoys a bit of cut in the ground so providing underfoot conditions aren't too lively she must come here with every chance of adding to her tally at Pattern company once again. At bigger prices, I wouldn't be entirely shocked if Naga out-ran her odds. On figures ,she has a mountain to climb and could arguably be out of her depth, but I think the set-up of this race looks tailor-made for her. It should be run at a good clip, and she has shaped as though 1m3f will be on the radar. She was seeking a 4-timer when beaten into 3rd at Ascot last time out, but shaped as though having her stamina drawn out even further should really suit. The excellent James Doyle takes the ride, and this combination can hit the frame at attractive odds with eight runners due to go to post.
Beverley 4.00 - Havana Blue e/w
This is incredibly wide-open and I am going to take a chance on Havana Blue as an each-way play. This is the type of race where you can make a case for numerous runners, as they all have bits and pieces of form which can see them in the mix. Havana Blue won on his only previous start over Course and Distance, and so he has to be taken seriously returning to this venue. Underfoot conditions should be spot on for the six-year-old, and from a handicapping point of view, he is starting to look very well treated off a BHA mark of 80 - the last time he was in the gold medal position was here off 4lb higher, so you have to say that the accessor is really starting to release their grip. Ryan Sexton takes the ride, and from stall 8 I can see a bold show from Havana Blue who could easily get in the shake-up at the Yorkshire venue in one of the trickiest races on the card to try and solve.
Stratford 6.50 - Hope Rising
I am going to take the chance that Hope Rising takes a step forward for her recent run at Huntingdon, and she should be a lot fitter for today's assignment. The 5-year-old Mare shaped as though she badly needed the run last time out, and it is worth noting that she improved a bundle for her first start of the campaign last season, as she won second time out, and I could envisage a similar thing happening this time around. Ground conditions should be perfect, and she has been eased 2lb to a BHA mark of 114. Gavin Sheehan takes the ride for the in-form Jamie Snowden team, who have been operating at around a 30% strike-rate for the last fortnight, and they look to have major claims of notching another winner here.
