Horse Racing Tips Today – Ed Quigley’s Best Bets for Saturday 16 May
Ed Quigley has been in sensational form, and is back with his best bets for what should be a wonderful day of action on Saturday...
Newbury 1.25 - West Wind Blows
This is a fascinating Group 3 over 1m4f, where if Kalpana is fully revved up, then she will take a lot of beating. However, she is conceding race-fitness to the field, and this could be the time that West Wind Blows cashes in after a string of brilliant efforts in defeat. His runner-up finish to Calandagan at Meydan two starts ago reads really well, and a repeat of that effort would see the Simon & Ed Crisford representative really serve it up to the classy filly here. In receipt of 4lbs, he has to go very well here with the excellent William Buick in the saddle. Trip and ground suit, and a bold show can be expected from this ultra-consistent 7-year-old who should be in the hunt once more.
Bangor 2.10 - Saint Jeannais
Last October we saw a very impressive performance at Worcester, when Saint Jeannais produced a performance which made people sit up and take notice, as he streaked clear by nearly 8 lengths on the bridle. Subsequently he came up short at Ascot in a hotter race in what turned into a bit of a tactical and messy affair. This looks a perfect opportunity to lay down a marker as he now goes over Hurdles for the first time, and it will be exciting to see what he can achieve in this discipline for the Twiston-Davies team. Underfoot conditions should be ideal, and I am looking forward to seeing this combination strut their stuff.
Newbury 2.35 - More Thunder e/w
We have a belting renewal of the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes, with some of Europe's top milers meeting for an epic clash. Recent Earl Of Sefton winner Damysus is in fine fettle and comes into this race seeking his fourth win on the spin. Notable Speech is a major player, but there has to be an element of worry about the form of the Charlie Appleby team having not had a winner in May at the time of writing. The Lion In Winter is the joker in the pack with Aidan O'Brien admitting that he got his training 'all wrong' with the colt last season, and they will be very much focussing on events over 1m this season rather than trying to stretch his stamina out over further. If he brings his best to the table he could easily land the spoils but I am going to look elsewhere for an each-way alternative with the William Haggas trained More Thunder who steps back up in trip - a move which I think will really suit. He was last seen staying-on in fourth over 7f in the Foret last October, and he could easily thrive going the extra furlong here. The Haggas team are in red-hot form at the moment, and looks the each-way play with Tom Marquand in the saddle.
Newbury 3.10 - Albert Einstein
The drop back down to 6f has to be a big tick in the box for the Aidan O'Brien trained Albert Einstein. Successful at Group 3 level as a 2-year-old, he hasn't managed to win in two starts this season, where he hasn't looked totally in love with the combination of slow ground and 7f, and it will be fascinating to see how he gets on back down at 6f in Listed company. On ratings he doesn't have masses to find, and I suspect he will be much happier now tackling a sprint in an assignment which has a fairly wide-open feel to it.
Uttoxeter 6.50 - Skyjack Hijack e/w
We have a competitive looking Class 2 Handicap on our hands where you can make a case for quite a few runners. My eyes are drawn to the 8-year-old Skyjack Hijack who is yet to recapture his scintillating form of 2024, but is entitled to be firmly in the mix here on the comeback trail after injury. A couple of runs have been needed to remove the ring-rust, and he now looks dangerously well handicapped off a BHA mark of 130. William Shanahan is in the saddle claiming 5lb, so this combination are being given every chance by the accessor to get back at it. In 2024 he was a success story, winning 6 on the bounce, before coming unstuck in Grade 2 company at Cheltenham. He is in much calmer waters these days, and he rates a lively each-way angle with 8 runners due to go to post on Saturday evening with this step back up in trip looking as though it can help enhance his claims.
