After a summer devoid of rain, north-west England has been pummelled in the last few days. Showers throughout the week eased underfoot conditions, and 23mm of rain has hit the track since Thursday morning, seeing the going at Haydock Park now officially described as 'Heavy' at the time of writing.

Horse Racing Tips for Betfair Sprint Cup Stakes (6f - Group 1) - 3.40 at Haydock

One of the back-end dust-ups for the sprinters at the highest level, but perhaps not the massive field we were hoping for, and that, in part, is due to the weather. Therefore, this is potentially gruelling and leaves us with a maximum of 8 runners now, due to the defection of American Affair. This looks like a wide-open encounter, and the testing conditions pose a question mark for a few of these, who would undoubtedly prefer a sounder surface.

Kind of Blue disappointed last time out when down the field on rattling quick ground at Royal Ascot, but will have no fears heading into this assignment with either track or ground. The 5-year-old has hit the crossbar in this race for the last two years, finishing second on both occasions, including when going agonisingly close in 2024, when beaten by a head. So we know he can run well at this venue, and he is better equipped than most, as he demonstrated by winning the British Champions Sprint at Ascot the same year. It was hard work underfoot, but he powered through the mud on that day and should cope with the ground here better than most.

Almeraq looked most progressive and was in flying form until throwing in a lacklustre effort at Newmarket last time out. He was well ahead of Kind Of Blue at Royal Ascot, but seemed flat in Group 1 company last time out, so a bounce back is required. He does have a win on Soft ground on the CV from winning a minor event at Yarmouth two years ago, but on balance, he is one I wouldn't want to take skinny odds on, for all that the William Haggas and Tom Marquand representative has to be respected.

Of the remainder, a case can be made for quite a few of these, but there is a nervousness over their ability to handle the ground. At a massive price, James's Delight perhaps lacks the raw class to win this, but with the ground as it is, sometimes the class angle goes a bit out of the window, and this comes down to who will stick it out in these conditions. He has winning form on hock-deep ground and could hit the frame at attractive odds.

Persica is battle-hardened and the rain that has arrived will be music to the ears of connections.

The 5-year-old is always a threat at Group 3 level, enjoys soft ground, and has winning form over much further distances, so his stamina will be a valuable asset in this assignment.

Dancing Gemini is undoubtedly a class act on his day and is in calmer waters here, dropping down in trip. However, he arrives under a bit of a cloud.
