Mill Reef Stakes Tips - 6f - Group 2 (2.12 Race)

We potentially have eight unexposed sprinters lining up for the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury on Saturday, in what looks to be a competitive and wide-open renewal.

Arapaho Gold has become an absolute win-machine and deserves to be favourite for this on the back of winning the Gimcrack at York last time out, which looks very smart form. The 2nd, 6th and 8th from that encounter have all gone on to win again since, so there is a robustness to the collateral form which can't be sniffed at. However, Michael Dods's runner will have to attempt to try and concede six pounds to the filly JOLIVETTE. Andrew Balding is having a cracking season, and teams up with Colin Keane for a filly who can give the warm favourite plenty to think about. She won on her debut at Newmarket in May, and then has shown smart form in defeat – including last time out in the Lowther, when given a lot to do from off the pace, but still posted a good effort to finish third behind Libertango and Star Of State. That form in itself looks very solid, and she is entitled to take another step forwards here under more positive tactics.

Ed Quigley's Next Best Bet for Newbury On Saturday: Witch Hunter at 3.55

It is time to focus on the Class 3 Handicap action at Newbury, taking place over the 7f. We potentially have a very big field for this assignment, where we could see 20 runners take their chance for a first prize of just over £16,000, and naturally in a race of this nature, you can make a case for quite a few runners in here.

Castle Rock is the unexposed sort for the Godolphin operation, who could be well handicapped, but simultaneously might be a little bit wet behind the ears for a race of this nature.

I am going to take a chance here with the Richard Hannon-trained WITCH HUNTER, who has been in the doldrums lately for a yard that hasn't been firing all cylinders. However, this enigmatic 7-year-old has the ability to run a big race at a venue where he has shown some smart form in the past. The gelding has a win and three placed efforts from his previous trips to Newbury, and is more than capable of springing a surprise returning to this track with underfoot conditions to suit. Jamie Spencer takes the ride, and will be looking to time his challenge to a nicety. From a handicap perspective, he could easily make waves here off an official mark of 92; he was last making his way into the winner's enclosure off a mark of one pound higher, so is undeniably well treated on old form.

This big field and strong gallop should suit, and I think the Jamie Spencer and Richard Hannon representatives will be up to the task of getting involved at the business end of proceedings at an each-way price.

Horse Racing Tips for the 1.02 Race

Earlier on the card, we have Group 3 action to kick things off for the sprinters in what looks a compelling race.

FIRST INSTINCT caused a minor upset when landing this 12 months ago, and looks to have every chance of getting in the mix once again here for the William Haggas and Cieran Fallon combination. He doesn't have masses to find on ratings, and everything looks set fair for a big run for an in-form yard. Ground conditions will suit, and I don't think that this combination will be a million miles away.
