Horse Racing Tips: Ed Quigley's Celebration Mile Best Bets for Goodwood on 29 August

We have a highly competitive Group 2 at the Sussex venue, where there isn't a lot to split the protagonists here on ratings, and this ought to be a closely fought contest.

Horse racing analyst Ed Quigley shares his horse racing tips, including Celebration Mile best bets and more Goodwood and Sandown predictions for Saturday, 29 August.

Celebration Mile Tips: Group 2 at Goodwood (3.10 on Saturday)

I am going to take a chance on the sole 3-year-old in the line-up, Zavateri (2/1), representing the Eve Johnson Houghton team, with Charlie Bishop taking the ride.

Zavateri has shown some good form at this course in the past. He won the Vintage Stakes at this track last season, was far from disgraced when meeting trouble in-running in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, and did well to finish fifth in the circumstances, beaten just over 4 lengths behind Bow Echo. That was Zavateri's only try at 1m, and I think he will be much happier back at that trip, having looked out of his comfort zone on the Knavesmire over 7f last time out. He should have a lot more to offer over this trip, and naturally, returning to this venue at Group 2 level should see him right in the mix at the business end of proceedings here. I think Zavateri has massive claims.

Seagulls Eleven (10/3) and Qirat look to be the biggest dangers on paper, and given the strength of their respective course form, they ought to be in the shake-up. Qirat was responsible for one of the biggest upsets in the history of horse racing, winning last year's Sussex Stakes at odds of 150/1. He has won at York so far this campaign, and wasn't disgraced in the Lennox Stakes last month with a fourth-place finish. Connections rolled the dice in the Sussex Stakes 24 hours later, but he failed to fire. If he brings his best form to the table, then he will be tough to beat, but it comes with risks attached. Seagulls Eleven disappointed in the Sussex Stakes last time out, but is the second highest-rated horse in the field, and if bouncing back to his best, he would be a major player in this company for the Hugo Palmer team.

Boiling Point (4/1) is another runner who enjoys the track and has lots of decent form over longer trips. This poses a much greater test of speed than some of his recent assignments, but if he copes with the drop in trip, he has the credentials to go close in this for the Karl Burke yard. Stamina is clearly this individual's forte, and I would imagine he will be ridden forcefully over this distance.

We have a trappy Handicap on our hands, and this will be fascinating to watch.

Goodwood, 2.35 – Tony Montana (5/1)

I am going to give the nod to the 6-year-old Tony Montana (5/1), who steps back up in the trip for the first time in ages, and shapes as though 1m4f would be perfect for him these days.

It's been a long time between drinks, as you have to go back to 2024 for the last time he was in the winner's enclosure, but he ran a belter last time out when staying-on to finish fourth at this venue over 10f, giving every impression that the longer trip would really suit. Off a mark of 94, he is fairly treated, and could easily get involved for each-way backers. It looks as though 12f is perfect for him now, and I rate his chances.
