Gasly’s pole comes just 24 hours after losing his Monaco podium due to a reinstated penalty, making today’s achievement even more remarkable.

Alpine introduced a major upgrade last weekend, and although it showed little promise in Zandvoort, Gasly said: “It was amazing… It has been nine years trying to chase a pole position and to take my first win here and then my first pole here is amazing.”

Missed Opportunity For Russell

Russell, who had been favourite for pole due to Antonelli’s penalty, admitted frustration after getting caught behind Verstappen on his final run: “Max just slammed on the brakes… P2 is a good place to start.”

Ferrari had hoped their new engine would put them in the fight for pole, but both Leclerc and Hamilton struggled for ultimate pace.

Still, with two Ferraris starting inside the top five and Antonelli at the back, Monza’s passionate tifosi will expect a major challenge for victory.
