F1 Canadian GP - Qualifying Tips & Predictions For Montreal
With sprint qualifying now complete in Montreal, here are our F1 Canadian GP qualifying tips & predictions ahead of Saturday’s crucial session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Formula One's North American leg continues this weekend, and if sprint qualifying is anything to go on, the full qualifying session could be one of the tightest battles of the season so far.
Mercedes' George Russell claimed sprint pole, with teammate Kimi Antonelli completing a front-row lockout for the Silver Arrows.
Russell's final SQ3 lap of 1:12.965 was enough to deny the championship leader by just 0.068 seconds, while McLaren continued to show impressive pace with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri lining up third and fourth, respectively.
Ferrari also looked competitive across all three sprint qualifying sessions, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc both comfortably inside the top six, while Max Verstappen could only manage seventh after struggling to hook up a clean final lap.
Looking ahead to Grand Prix qualifying later today, Mercedes are favourites one again with most UK betting sites, which is no surprise given their early-season dominance.
F1 Canadian GP Qualifying Predictions
Sprint qualifying gave us clear indication that Mercedes have the fastest one-lap pace in Montreal.
Russell looked completely at home around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and produced arguably his strongest qualifying performance of the season so far.
The Brit loves this track and will be hoping to replicate his sprint pole ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix.
Antonelli, meanwhile, continues to impress. The 19-year-old Italian was rapid throughout sprint qualifying and looks more than capable of pushing his teammate for pole.
McLaren will also be in the mix. Norris was just a few tenths from sprint pole, despite not putting in a perfect lap, while Piastri should also be in contention.
Ferrari may yet spring a surprise, too. Lewis Hamilton, in particular, looked more comfortable as sprint qualifying went on, and the seven-time champion has always performed well in Canada.
Red Bull remains the biggest question mark ahead of qualifying. Max Verstappen never looked fully settled on Friday, but writing off the Dutchman is always dangerous.
F1 Canadian GP – Qualifying Tips
Below, we have picked out three of our best tips for Canadian GP qualifying.
All odds taken from Betnero at 10:30 UK time on Saturday, 23 May 2026.
Qualifying Winner - George Russell - 2.22
First up, we are backing George Russell to convert his sprint qualifying pace into full Grand Prix pole later today.
The Mercedes driver was on fine form from the very first session of the weekend, and delivered when it mattered most in SQ3.
Russell’s confidence around Montreal is obvious, and with Mercedes giving him the fastest car on paper, he is the obvious choice to claim pole.
Qualifying Top Three - Lando Norris - 2.37
Next up, we are backing Lando Norris to secure a top-three result in qualifying this afternoon.
The McLaren driver looked consistently quick throughout sprint qualifying and ultimately finished third, despite admitting he left time on the table during his final SQ3 run.
McLaren may not quite have Mercedes’ outright pace over a single lap, but Norris continues to extract maximum performance from the papaya package.
With the margins at the front incredibly tight, he looks well placed to challenge for another top-three qualifying result in Montreal.
Qualifying Winning Margin Under 0.10 Seconds - 2.50
Finally, we are expecting an extremely close fight for pole position. At odds of 2.50, we believe backing a winning margin of under 0.10s is good value.
Sprint qualifying showed just how competitive the top teams are around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with Russell beating Antonelli to pole by only 0.068 seconds.
McLaren also remains firmly in contention, while Ferrari and Verstappen are unlikely to be far away if they piece together clean final laps in Q3.
Given how little separated the front four in sprint qualifying, another nail-biting pole battle looks extremely likely.
