We have a trip to Amsterdam this evening and it’s a big clash, plus the start of two new eras for our Netherlands vs Germany predictions.

Both sides are in need of a lift after disappointing World Cup campaigns, but who will get up and running with three points?

We’ve been treated to this fixture quite regularly in recent years and Thursday’s clash will be the ninth meeting between the two since 2018.

There’s been 28 goals in the eight previous games in that time, while both teams have scored in six of them.

And neither side showed much defensive steel over the summer at the World Cup. In four matches apiece, the Dutch and the Germans failed to keep a clean sheet between them. Perhaps now is a good time to remind readers that Die Mannschaft failed to keep out the likes of Curacao, Ecuador and Paraguay on their way to a Round-Of-32 exit…

The Squads

Thursday night will be our first look at these two under new management.

Spanish World Cup winner Xavi has taken the reins at the Netherlands and his possession-based style is likely to suit a nation that shares a similar footballing philosophy.

Germany, on the other hand, have gone for the rock-and-roll of Jurgen Klopp, who has called up a huge 44-man squad packed with 15 uncapped players. Throw in the retirements of Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rudiger, and you have a squad that lacks strength in depth.

And while the Dutch have left out the likes of Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong for this round of matches, there is a much more experienced, settled feel about them.

With that in mind, I like the home win at 11/8. You have to go back almost three years for the Netherlands’ last competitive home defeat, and with the Germans in flux, I fancy their hosts to take advantage.

Dutch Scorers

One man whose form you can’t ignore for Netherlands vs Germany predictions is home forward Brian Brobbey.

The Sunderland striker bagged three goals at the World Cup and bounced back from a slow Premier League start with a hat-trick in his side’s 5-3 defeat at Manchester City last weekend.

The 24-year-old looks set to lead the line in the Dutch capital and against an inexperienced backline he looks a good bet at 5/4 to find the net anytime.

I also like the look of Cody Gakpo, who is a regular goalscorer at international level and has already opened his account in league and cup for Liverpool this season, on the back of three World Cup goals of his own.

Gakpo is available at 17/10 to score in 90 minutes.

The Final Word

This has the makings of a decent game and recent history suggests both sides enjoy the end-to-end nature of this match.

Klopp will undoubtedly get this side ticking but the experimental feel of his squad suggests it will take some time, and a trip to face the Dutch is a tricky assignment even for the most experienced nations.

Xavi’s first home match in charge is a good chance for his side to mark the beginning of a new era with a positive result, and I really like the Home Win & Both Teams to Score double at 13/5.
