England boss Thomas Tuchel raised eyebrows when he announced his 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As well as several high-profile omissions, the addition of Ivan Toney was a real shock for many.

The Al-Ahli man has made just one substitute appearance under Tuchel, but the former Brentford striker is on the plane and will be looking to make an impact in North America.

Toney’s Saudi Adventure

Toney surprised many when he left the Premier League to join the Saudi Pro League in August 2024. However, the Northampton-born star has been a huge hit in the Middle East.

Toney’s Premier League record was superb, netting 36 goals in 85 games for a team looking to survive each season. His record in Saudi Arabia is even better, as Toney has scored a staggering 55 goals in just 62 league matches.

He has helped the club win two AFC Champions League Elite titles and the 2025 Saudi Super Cup. He was also the King’s Cup top scorer this season, scoring six times.

What Can the Al-Ahli Hitman Offer the Three Lions?

As well as being an excellent goalscorer at the highest level, Toney is one of the best penalty takers in the world. Penalties could play a huge part in England’s World Cup campaign this summer.

Toney also offers something a little bit different to Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins. His physical presence in attack could be exactly what England need if they need to shut down the game and keep the ball up the field.

Toney made three substitute appearances for England at UEFA Euro 2026, all when England were chasing the game. He could be crucial off the bench if his nation needs a goal.

Toney has made seven appearances for England, scoring once. His only goal came in a friendly draw with Belgium at Wembley Stadium over two years ago. He has hardly featured under Tuchel, but stats alone prove that Toney deserves his World Cup spot.
