Scotland are on the verge of a World Cup exit after a humbling 3-0 defeat to Brazil in Miami.

A draw would’ve put Steve Clarke’s side in the driving seat for a knockout place, but the worst possible start saw them calamitously give away possession in their own penalty area, leaving Vinicius Jr with the simple task of tapping home inside the opening seven minutes.

And after having another goal unfortunately ruled out by VAR shortly after, Vini was at the double on the stroke of half-time, heading in from close range after Scotland failed to clear.

It was always going to be an uphill task for the underdogs, but Scotland never looked like seriously testing Alisson Becker in the Brazil goal, and the game was out of sight on the hour as Matheus Cunha stroked home from Vini’s pullback.

The result leaves Scotland in third in Group C, but with only three points and a poor goal difference, they now look unlikely to take one of the eight spots available for the next stage.

In the other Group C game, Morocco confirmed their spot in the next round after beating Haiti 4-2 in an entertaining match in Atlanta.

They had to twice come from behind, with Lenny Joseph and William Isidor putting the Haitians ahead either side of Achraf Hakimi’s 39th minute goal.

But Ismael Saibari’s excellent sweeping finish restored parity before half-time and the Atlas Lions struck twice in the second half to seal a win that leaves them on seven points from their three games.

Elsewhere, Group A also reached its conclusion, with already qualified Mexico ending the Czech Republic’s poor campaign with a 3-0 win at the Azteca. Goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones and Alvaro Fidalgo ensured the co-hosts ended the group stage with a perfect record.

And South Africa secured the final automatic qualification spot in the group after Thapelo Maseko’s crisp finish on the counter gave them a slender 1-0 win over South Korea.

The defeat means Korea must wait and see if their 3 points and -1 goal difference is enough to send them through as one of the eight best third-place sides.
