Lionel Messi has guided Argentina to yet another FIFA World Cup final, with the little magician playing a pivotal role in his nation’s semi-final victory over England.

Argentina, the current World Cup holders, are gearing up for another major final, and the captain will have a huge part to play in this weekend’s showdown with Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

Messi in Inspired Form

Messi turned 39 during the tournament, but the Inter Miami superstar is showing no signs of letting up. In fact, this has arguably been the No. 10’s greatest World Cup showing of his glittering career.

Messi kicked off the 2026 edition with his first-ever World Cup hat-trick in a 3-0 win against Algeria. He followed that up by netting both goals in a 2-0 victory over Austria before grabbing another in a 3-1 triumph over Jordan.

The attacker netted knockout goals in the wins against Cape Verde and Egypt, taking his tally to eight, level with France’s Kylian Mbappe. Going by the latest World Cup Golden Boot odds, Messi is the 9/10 favourite to finish as the top scorer.

Can La Albiceleste Retain the World Cup Trophy?

Argentina are looking to become the first nation to retain the World Cup since Brazil’s back-to-back victories in 1958 and 1962. The Argentinians have shone on the grandest stage in recent times, reaching three of the last four World Cup finals.

Argentina came from behind to beat England in a tense semi-final in Atlanta. Lionel Scaloni’s side levelled in the 85th minute thanks to Enzo Fernandez’s wonder strike, and Lautaro Martinez headed home the winner in the 92nd minute.

The holders will now go up against Spain in what promises to be a mouth-watering final at the spectacular MetLife Stadium. When the sides last met, Spain won a friendly by six goals to one in 2018. However, both teams are in stunning form, and it could go either way.

No matter what happens on Sunday, this will be Messi’s final World Cup game, and maybe even his last match in the White and Sky Blue jersey. Can the greatest of all time go out with a bang?
