Henderson Backing Bellingham to be England’s World Cup Star

England kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on Wednesday, facing old enemy Croatia in Group L action. Veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson has backed Jude Bellingham to be the Three Lions’ “X-factor” player in North America.

Bellingham has come under some criticism for his performances for club and country this season, but the Real Madrid superstar remains one of the world’s very best players.

Bellingham set the world alight in his first season at Real Madrid, but injuries have halted his momentum. Nevertheless, he is fit for the World Cup and ready to play a starring role for his national side.

Henderson has been around the England senior team for over 15 years, racking up 90 appearances for the Three Lions. He was quizzed on Bellingham’s form while giving an interview in England’s Kansas City training base.

Henderson was full of praise for England’s No. 10, saying, “I honestly couldn’t speak highly enough of him. What he gives us is something really special. He gives us an X-factor in the team and is a big-game player.”

Could Henderson’s Experience Be Crucial?

Henderson is not part of the England squad just to say nice things about his teammates. The Brentford midfielder was included for his experience and football nous, which could be vital if the Three Lions are to go far this summer.

Granted, while Bellingham will be one of England’s main men, Henderson will be a bit-part player, but Thomas Tuchel is looking to utilise his entire 26-man squad in North America.

Players like Henderson are the perfect complement to playmakers like Bellingham, as the former Liverpool man will put out the fires in midfield and pass the baton on to England’s game changers.

Tuchel’s troops will be looking for all three points when they face fellow European nation Croatia in Arlington in their opening fixture. England then travel to Foxborough to play Ghana before heading to East Rutherford to take on Panama. The Three Lions are the favourites to go through as group winners.
