It was a dramatic night of knockout football at the 2026 World Cup, with Germany the first high-profile casualty after they were eliminated by Paraguay in a penalty shootout.

Die Mannschaft were behind just before half-time when former Brighton forward Julio Enciso headed home Matias Galarza’s drilled cross.

But Kai Hazertz equalised shortly after the break with an excellent glancing header following good work from Florian Wirtz.

From there, you may have expected the Germans to kick on, but clear-cut chances were at a premium and both sides had to settle for extra time.

And Jonathan Tah thought he’d won it when he headed home from a corner, but VAR controversially ruled it out for what looked like a soft foul on Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

Gill then became the hero in the shootout, saving Havertz’s and Nick Woltemade’s spot-kicks, before Tah blasted over the bar to complete a stunning victory, with Paraguay now facing the winner of France vs Sweden in the last 16.

Also through are Morocco, who came from behind in dramatic fashion to beat the Netherlands in Monterrey.

There were chances for both sides, before Cody Gakpo smashed home after Crysencio Summerville teed up the Liverpool forward in the 72nd minute, despite falling to the ground during a swift Dutch counter.

The Atlas Lions pushed for an equaliser and got their reward in the first minute of injury time, with Fulham’s Issa Diop heading home a wicked Chemsdine Talbi cross.

For the second game in a row, only a penalty shootout could separate the two sides.

But neither of them could seize the initiative, and after four of the first eight penalties failed to convert, we arrived at sudden death.

And when Summerville’s penalty was parried away by Yassine Bounou, Ismael Saibari stepped up to stroke home the deciding spot-kick to send Morocco fans into delirium.

Their reward for victory is a last-16 tie with Canada on 4th July in Houston.
