The England squad numbers for the 2026 World Cup have been confirmed, and may offer the clearest indication yet of how Thomas Tuchel plans to line up in North America this summer.

With the Three Lions now in Miami, they are already training fiercely ahead of the tournament. Speculation is rife over who will start the opening match.

While shirt numbers are not always definitive, several selections appear to hint strongly at the German coach’s preferred starting XI ahead of England’s opening group-stage match against Croatia.

England Squad Numbers Drop Major Hints

The biggest talking point surrounds Jude Bellingham. He has been handed the iconic No 10 shirt despite speculation over his role in recent months.

The Real Madrid midfielder appears set to operate as England’s main attacking playmaker, potentially ahead of Morgan Rogers, who takes the No 17 shirt.

Another significant clue comes in defence, where Nico O'Reilly has been given the No 3 jersey. The versatile Manchester City youngster is expected to begin the tournament as England’s first-choice left-back. Meanwhile, Dan Burn, who can also fill that role, wears No 15.

In midfield, Elliot Anderson has been rewarded with the No 8 shirt following an impressive breakthrough under Tuchel. The choice suggests the Nottingham Forest midfielder could partner Declan Rice in England’s engine room.

Veteran Jordan Henderson, previously associated with the No 8 shirt, instead takes No 14 - the same number he wore during his successful years at Liverpool FC.

At centre-back, the numbering also appears revealing. John Stones and Marc Guehi have been assigned No 5 and No 6, respectively, suggesting they are currently Tuchel’s preferred defensive partnership.

Further forward, Marcus Rashford has been handed the No 11 shirt after finishing the season at FC Barcelona. That could indicate he is currently ahead of Anthony Gordon in the race for the left-wing spot.

The one major exception is Reece James, who keeps his familiar No 24 shirt despite being expected to start at right-back.

England’s World Cup Fixtures and Group Opponents

England have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama for the 2026 World Cup.

Tuchel’s side begin their campaign against Croatia on June 17 in Arlington, Texas, before facing Ghana on June 23 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Their final group game comes against Panama on June 27 in New Jersey.

Croatia are expected to provide England’s toughest challenge in the group, with memories still fresh from the 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat. Ghana bring athleticism and pace, while Panama will likely set up defensively and look to frustrate England.

With the tournament now expanded to 48 teams, England are widely expected to progress comfortably into the knockout rounds. Tuchel’s squad combines experienced tournament performers with emerging young talent.

There is a serious belief that England can challenge for a first World Cup title since 1966.

Key Players Who Could Define England’s Tournament

As ever, captain Harry Kane remains central to England’s hopes. The striker enters the tournament in strong form after another prolific season with Bayern Munich. Kane remains England’s all-time leading scorer.

Bellingham is expected to be one of the stars of the competition after another outstanding campaign in Spain. At the same time, Bukayo Saka continues to develop into one of Europe’s most dangerous wide forwards.

Much attention will also fall on younger names such as O’Reilly, Anderson and Kobbie Mainoo. All three could become breakout stars on the world stage.

England’s blend of technical quality, attacking depth and tournament experience makes them one of the favourites heading into the competition. Whether Tuchel can finally deliver silverware, though, remains the biggest question of all.
