Could Palmer’s World Cup Omission Be Tuchel’s Biggest Mistake?

WARSAW, POLAND - 10 APRIL, 2025: UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final, Legia Warszawa vs Chelsea FC 0:3 o.p: Cole Palmer of Chelsea FC

England boss Thomas Tuchel raised eyebrows and turned heads with his controversial 2026 FIFA World Cup squad selection, with several huge names missing from the 26.

Arguably, the biggest exclusion is Cole Palmer, who played a huge role for the Three Lions at UEFA Euro 2024 and is one of the best players in the world on his day. Could leaving the Chelsea man behind be Tuchel’s biggest mistake this summer?

Palmer Tops the Bill of Absentees

A year ago, no way would a fully fit Palmer be left out of any England squad. The attacking midfielder had an exceptional season for the Blues, helping his club win the FIFA Club World Cup and establishing himself as one of the world’s best.

Granted, the former Manchester City youngster has not been at his best this season. Injuries have halted his momentum, while Chelsea’s poor form has certainly held him back.

Nevertheless, a 100% fit and firing Palmer is always a threat, and England may require his guile and footballing brain in the latter stages of this summer’s tournament.

Palmer was not the only big name to miss out, as the likes of Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Harry Maguire were also omitted. Those players have been integral for their country over the past few years, so their exclusion is a mystery to most.

Can Three Lions End 60 Years of Hurt?

England have only won the World Cup once, famously beating West Germany at Wembley Stadium in 1966. Incredibly, 60 years have passed since the English last won a major trophy.

They had a rapid rise under Gareth Southgate, reaching two European finals and a World Cup semi-final. However, they come up short every time – can Tuchel, a German, take the English to the next level?

England head to North America as one of the favourites to lift the trophy. Before a ball is kicked, you can get odds of 6/1 for the Three Lions to prevail. The likes of France, Spain, Brazil, and Argentina are also up there.
