What Next for Newcastle After Howe Exit?
With the 2026-27 Premier League season just a few weeks away, Newcastle United are looking for a new manager after Eddie Howe’s shock departure.
It has been a turbulent summer in the Toon, with several top players leaving the club before the boss stepped down. Where do the Magpies go from here?
Jaissle Lined Up
Newcastle are wasting little time in lining up Howe’s replacement, with Al-Ahli head coach Matthias Jaissle reportedly in advanced talks. The 38-year-old German is expected to sign a deal at St James’ Park in the next couple of days.
Jaissle is one of the most exciting young head coaches in world football. He is still under 40, but the former 1899 Hoffenheim centre-back has already managed FC Liefering, Red Bull Salzburg, and Al-Ahli.
With pre-season off and running, getting a new manager in as quickly as possible is the Newcastle board's priority. Even more so after the 4-1 loss to EFL Championship side Bristol City in midweek.
More Big Stars to Leave?
Newcastle’s starting XI this season will look completely different, as several popular faces have left St James’ over the summer.
Sandro Tonali, who was a hero on Tyneside, has made a huge-money switch to Tottenham Hotspur. Also, England international Anthony Gordon has moved to Barcelona.
Captain Bruno Guimaraes has expressed his desire to leave, and the Brazilian is closing in on a dream move to Arsenal. Lewis Hall is also attracting interest from elsewhere.
Will the Chaos Impact United’s Season?
Newcastle were in the UEFA Champions League last season, but the Magpies finished 12th and missed out on European qualification. They only have the domestic cups and Premier League to focus on.
It is difficult to predict how Newcastle’s season will go after such a transition. Could the club be dragged into a relegation scrap this term?
Newcastle’s 2026-27 EPL season gets underway with a home game against Liverpool before a tough trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
