WARSAW, POLAND - 22 AUGUST, 2019: Steven Gerrard coach of Rangers FC seen during the UEFA Europa League Play Off match between Legia Warsaw and Rangers FC.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has emerged as the 1/2 favourite to take the vacant Burnley job.

Former incumbent Scott Parker left the club by mutual consent on Thursday after picking up just four wins from 34 Premier League games and seeing his side confirmed as relegated to the Championship.

But despite an excellent record at second-tier level, where he has won promotion in each of his three seasons there, the Clarets have decided to make a change.

Reports earlier on Thursday linked former Liverpool striker and ex-Burnley assistant manager Craig Bellamy with the role. Bellamy was number 2 to Vincent Kompany during the now Bayern boss’ tenure at Turf Moor.

The Welshman is currently in charge of his national side, and despite losing out to Bosnia in the 2026 World Cup play-offs, Bellamy is reluctant to leave his post ahead of a home Euro 2028 campaign.

And that has effectively cleared the runway for Gerrard - whose last role was 18 months at Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq - to clinch the job. The 45-year-old is now odds-on favourite with most bookmakers and will be keen to restore his managerial reputation in English football, following a disappointing time in charge of Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, Liam Rosenior, sacked by Chelsea just over a week ago, is available at 7/1, but is said to be keen to take a break from football after an intense stint at Stamford Bridge.

Other ex-Premier League managers in the betting running are former Spurs and Brentford boss Thomas Frank (10/1), and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (7/1), who is a free agent after the ex-Manchester United manager was sacked by Besiktas last August.
