City Seal Fernandez Deal as Chelsea’s Camara Move Collapses

It was another record-breaking summer transfer window, with Premier League clubs spending an eye-watering £3.4 billion on players during the close season, and more than half of the division’s sides broke their transfer records on individual purchases.

And last night saw a dramatic conclusion to one of the summer’s longest transfer sagas.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who made no secret of his desire to leave Stamford Bridge, was reunited with former boss Enzo Maresca as he joined Manchester City for a British record £125 million.

A New Era For Maresca’s Man City

The signing completes an expensive midfield rebuild for City, who had already spent more than £200 million bringing in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and young Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.

But the deal for Fernandez was a protracted one, after City missed a 15th August deadline set by Chelsea to sign the player. The move was also contingent on the West Londoners signing a replacement, and last night a £47 million move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara had been agreed.

And after the Senegal international completed a medical, Chelsea gave the green light for Fernandez to complete his switch to the Etihad.

However, without explanation, Monaco pulled the plug on the deal, leaving Xabi Alonso with a gaping hole in his midfield ahead of a tough Premier League schedule, beginning with a trip to Arsenal this weekend.

There were no doubts that City needed to spend after a disappointing 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

And after beginning this season with two wins from two, they now look set to go toe-to-toe with title holders Arsenal.
