Chelsea Complete Chavarria Deal as Summer Spending Continues

Chelsea have completed the signing of Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria for a fee of around £16 million.

The Spaniard has signed a five-year deal to become Chelsea’s eleventh signing of a busy summer. This latest acquisition takes Chelsea’s summer spending spree up towards the €400 million mark.

New boss Xabi Alonso has made the left-back position a priority since the departure of Marc Cucurella, who joined Real Madrid in a deal that could be worth up to €60 million.

But the deal to sign Chavarria has been a protracted one that has taken most of the summer to get done. Vallecano are one of a small number of Spanish clubs outside “The Big Three” to be in a strong financial position, allowing them to bide their time in negotiations.

The signing is another move away from Chelsea's recent strategy of signing talented but inexperienced young players on big contracts.

After a tenth-place finish last season, the club have signed experienced campaigners Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, while 28-year-old Chavarria will also increase the average age of a green Chelsea squad.

The full-back joined Vallecano from Real Zaragoza on deadline day of the summer transfer window in 2022 and went on to make 125 appearances for the Madrid-based side.

His career to date doesn’t particularly stand out, but his underlying statistical data, as well as his impressive performances against Real Madrid while Alonso was in charge, surged the full-back to the top of Chelsea’s shopping list.

Chavarria is known for his aggression in the tackle and his ability to get up and down the pitch, and with Alonso enjoying marked success with aggressive wing-backs during his spell at Bayer Leverkusen, this latest signing looks set to be one that gives Chelsea a new dynamic on the left flank.
