Bruno Fernandes will continue as Man United captain despite his outspoken comments following the 4-1 defeat to Como.

The midfielder criticised Michael Carrick’s tactical approach in Wednesday's Champions League loss, and suggested it was the responsibility of the coaching staff, not the players, to identify problems during the match.

Although the remarks were interpreted externally as a challenge to Carrick’s authority, the reaction inside Old Trafford has been more measured, with recognition that Fernandes was placed under intense scrutiny after conducting 10 post‑match interviews.

Bruno Fernandes and Man United: Leadership, Frustration and Internal Reaction

United officials accept that Fernandes’ frustration stemmed from the nature of the loss, one of the club’s worst European results in recent memory. While his comments caused disappointment, there is acknowledgement that emotions were running high, particularly as he had been substituted for Joshua Zirkzee during the second half.

Whether Fernandes starts Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth remains unclear, and Carrick is expected to face questions about the incident in his pre‑match press conference. Wayne Rooney, reacting to the Como defeat, said he was in “shock” at United’s performance and expressed deep concern about the direction of the club.

Although he defended Carrick personally, Rooney accused the players of lacking accountability, saying “they’re selfish… they’re like babies” and warning that public criticism from within the squad could fracture the dressing room.

Rooney’s Warning, Carrick’s Future and United’s Internal Pressure

Rooney believes Fernandes’ dip in form compared with last season is contributing to the tension. He argued that Fernandes is “putting pressure on someone else because he doesn’t want to face it,” urging senior players to reflect on their own performances rather than deflect blame.

The former United striker also called on the club’s hierarchy to clarify Carrick’s future amid speculation he is close to dismissal. Rooney said Carrick must “come out fighting” to protect himself, warning that the squad’s behaviour could cost him his job.
