Arsenal Stunned by Fleetwood in Huge Cup Giant-Killing

EFL League Two outfit Fleetwood Town beat Premier League champions Arsenal on Tuesday night in one of the biggest cup upsets in English football history.
The fourth-tier team were given no hope by the bookies before the game, but Town took the Gunners to penalties and won the shootout 5-3.
The Biggest-Ever Cup Upset?
We have seen some incredible upsets in the EFL Cup and FA Cup over the years, but last night’s shock at Highbury Stadium could be the biggest of all time.
While the Fishermen languish down in 18th spot in League Two, Arsenal’s star-studded squad is flying high in the top tier, joint top of the Premier League table with Manchester City.
Arsenal had FIFA World Cup winners and £100m players in their team, but the minnows from Lancashire more than matched Mikel Arteta’s superstars.
The Story of the Night
Arsenal were expected to walk all over Fleetwood and comfortably book their spot in the last eight, but the League Two team had other ideas.
The exciting Aaron Loupalo-Bi, on loan from Premier League Fulham, gave Town a stunning lead after 21 minutes. Fleetwood held their advantage until Viktor Gyokeres bundled the ball home five minutes into the second half.
Arsenal created numerous chances, but Jay Lynch was a stalwart in the Cods’ goal. Max Dowman was controversially sent off near the end, and Fleetwood took the tie to penalties.
Bruno Guimaraes, who cost Arsenal £75m in the summer, missed his penalty, allowing young Northern Irish defender Conor Haughey to smash home the winning kick to cap off an extraordinary night for Matt Lawlor’s men.
Arsenal must dust themselves down and get ready for this weekend’s visit to Anfield. As for Fleetwood, they are looking to get back to winning ways in League Two when they welcome Bristol Rovers to Highbury on Saturday afternoon.
