Max Verstappen McLaren Rumours Gather Pace As Talks Held
Max Verstappen has been linked to McLaren after it emerged he had held talks with the reigning constructors' champions.
According to reports, Verstappen's management recently held preliminary discussions with McLaren CEO Zak Brown during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.
While those talks are understood to have taken place, they are not believed to concern an immediate switch. Both current drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, are contracted beyond 2027.
Instead, the discussions appear to form part of Verstappen's longer-term planning as uncertainty grows over his future at Red Bull.

Although Verstappen remains under contract until the end of 2028, his deal reportedly contains a performance-related exit clause.
That could allow him to leave if he is outside the top two in the Drivers' Championship later this summer, significantly increasing the odds of an early departure.
However, with Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren all settled for 2027, there are few realistic alternatives for the Dutchman.
The McLaren links are therefore viewed less as evidence of an imminent transfer and more as a way of maintaining pressure on Red Bull to continue improving its package.
Verstappen has repeatedly stated that he wants to spend his Formula 1 career with Red Bull.
However, that is only if the team can provide a car capable of fighting for victories and championships.
Encouragingly for Red Bull, a major upgrade introduced at the Austrian Grand Prix significantly improved the RB22's competitiveness.
Verstappen qualified strongly before a Q3 crash denied him a front-row start, and he recovered to finish within two seconds of race winner George Russell after displaying genuine race-winning pace.
Despite Verstappen's manager, Raymond Vermeulen, publicly denying any negotiations with McLaren, he has made it clear that the coming weeks will be crucial.
Red Bull remains Verstappen's preferred destination, but only if its recent progress proves it can once again deliver a title-contending car.
