SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - November 06, 2025: George Russell, from United Kingdom competes for Mercedes. The build up for the 2025 Formula 1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix

George Russell has opened up about the emotional toll of a difficult 2026 season after losing the title to Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli.

The British driver admitted watching Antonelli surge towards the world championship has been “tough to deal with”.

Russell began the year as the F1 title favourite after winning the opening race, but Antonelli’s relentless form quickly shifted the momentum. In a reflective message to fans, Russell praised the Italian’s achievement and acknowledged that this campaign has been the most challenging of his career.

George Russell and the title fight: frustration, confusion and acceptance

Russell said the season unravelled after a strong start, with misfortune and inconsistent performances leaving him “often confused” and struggling to regain rhythm. He has taken three victories to Antonelli’s nine, and his sixth‑place finish in Mexico - combined with Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton finishing ahead - dropped him to fourth in the standings.

Despite the setbacks, Russell thanked Mercedes for producing “the best car and power‑unit this season”, praising the team’s four‑year rebuild. The Briton was visibly emotional after the race, prompting team principal Toto Wolff to excuse him from media duties.

Wolff described Russell as “distraught”, adding that his sportsmanship in congratulating Antonelli showed character. Russell promised fans he would “give my absolute all” to rediscover his peak form heading into next season, hoping that “a little bit of luck returns.”

Antonelli’s perspective and the wider 2027 challenge

Antonelli, now champion, acknowledged Russell’s misfortune and insisted his team‑mate remains “super‑quick” and capable of bouncing back. He emphasised that next season will bring an even tougher fight, with Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren all expected to challenge at the front. Antonelli said his focus is on continual improvement rather than solely beating Russell, noting that the competitive landscape will demand perfection.

As the season closes, Russell’s honesty and Antonelli’s respect highlight the dynamic within Mercedes — a team balancing celebration with determination to return stronger. For more paddock analysis, follow the latest Formula 1 tips throughout the off‑season.
